why does the original gta trilogy keep updating?
I own the gta trilogy (OG) on steam and even after they have been removed from steam for further purchase they keep receiving updates for some reason. they're always less than one MB and they come almost everyday. what in the world are they "patching".

I believe Rockstar has previouly made a name for themselves by retroactively patching games to death by removing content from purchases; its either that to promote the new release, or maybe they are adding advertisements for the new release.

Either way, Rockstar is not actually known for being trustworthy, so whatever they are doing, it can't be good.

Sounds like shader cache.

You can disable it if you don't want: Settings -> Shader Pre-Caching -> Uncheck "Enable Shader Pre-Caching"
It is actual bug fixes and what not. San Andreas is still played by alot of people.

If those updates are very small (a couple hundred kilobytes tops) and frequent, then it's probably this. Pre-compiled Vulkan-shaders are provided by VALVe.

If it actually happens to be a proper "patch" by Rockstar and yet another couple of tracks got removed due to licenses expiring, you can use downgrader mods, which also restore some the original aesthetics and details from the PS2 versions, which were for some reason missing in the PC versions of GTA3/VC/SA.

Can't wait for people giving the "definitive" UE4 ports this treatment only to get slapped by Take-Two's lawyers.

If you simply google San Andeas updates it shows all the updates. They advertise updating it again too.

That is for OpenGL and Vulkan games. Original GTA trilogy uses Direct3D API.

Yes, but Proton uses Vulkan which is why even DirectX games get shader-cache updates. They wanna make the upcoming Steam-Deck look as good as possible.
Perhaps Steam could do with an update, so that the shader cache for games only using DirectX doesn't update for Windows-users.

I do run linux but even before i enabled the shader pre-caching i would get very regular micro-updates like the ones i described.
Edit: i mentioned running linux because the vulkan shader pre-caching option is quite popular with linux users as compared to windows or mac users

i was expecting a complete handicap of the game once they released the definitive edition. Surprisingly it just seems that they care about the games as much as they did before the definitive edition; they don't

Have you played the games though? while the game isn't severely broken, in a lot of aspects it is simply unplayable on modern hardware. And on top of that mine isn't even modern it's a very old lenovo all-in-one with an i3 dual core

I have actually made all of those modifications, downgrades etc etc. I always just figured that rockstar was overwriting my modded files or something

yeah.... I'm on linux lol. All Direct3D/X calls have to be translated to Vulkan

i think they do planning on making those shaders compiled on their servers eventually. The hardware is all identical why not save the users a few minutes

By the time i get around to playing GTA 5 i think there will be no music left in the game. When they removed the music in gta 4 it really left a bad taste in my mouth and it prevents me from ever again buying a RS title when released at full price. Why bother? They will jsut remove the music anyway in the future. There need to be clauses in games that state the license aquired is for life.

That's mostly an issue with the music industry and record labels and how licensing works in general. For example, many games get de-listed outright forever, due to brand-licenses expiring (car brands, comic IP, etc.).
I don't fully blame Rockstar here, though Rockstar also patching versions bought before the license on Rockstar's end expired is total bs. It sure is a great example of why DRM and forced updates are stupid. imagine a T2 employee coming to your home, replacing your PS3 copy of GTA4 with a new one missing some songs.

Downgrader mods and the fact, that you keep access to de-listed games so far have contained the brewing sh*tstorm. All that's needed is one greedy company pushing the envelope on this, like removing (a popular) de-listed game from people's Steam-libraries with the excuse of not having the license for some it's contents anymore. IMO, it's only a matter of time and for some reason, there will be people jumping into the crossfire in defense of these companies.
