i understand that a game can fit multiple categories, but the rule is meant to create variety
If the same game would be in different categories it means they deserve it no? Would it be a good idea to give the same limitations to movies and music? Since when do underperforming media deserve prizes just because they exist and the well performing ones can only win on 1 category?
No, it does not mean that. It just means that more people are playing that game and are nominating it which could be due to several reasons, and not necessarily because the game is better than others. MMOs tend to have a lot more people, so big, online games are just going to get nominated over and over, even if they are crappy, because they attract lots of players. Also, they are often free or cheap, making them more accessible.
Allowing for only one nomination per game allows other good games to also be recognised instead of trying to compete with whatever PUBG clone or whatever else is popular these days.
So mmo player's vote is worth trash? When was the last time an mmo won any awards for being a good game?
Should we strip the witcher 3 of all it's awards except for 1?
Yes, probably.
Personally I think it's a good quirk that Valve has put in. At least this way popularity is a tad less deciding, which is always a good thing since popular does not equal good.
