Are you allowed to link sites onto your steam profile?
Hello,

I just wanted to clarify that you are allowed to link/promote sites on your steam profile homepage.

Thank you!

Officially you are not...
[...]
Content Rules:
Do not post any content on Steam containing the following:
  • ...
  • Soliciting, begging, auctioning, raffling, selling, advertising, referrals
  • ...
Source: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/6862-8119-C23E-EA7B

... practically nobody actually cares unless it is a well know scam site.

Yes, but with a caveat. If the site in question is involved with gambling, referrals or other questionable activities, you better not.

Can these be tracked if they have already been removed from your profile?

Pretty sure if you removed any questionable links before a moderator got to them, you're probably fine. I'd just be real careful in the future.

If a moderator / supporter has done anything to your profile you will be notified about it. Most likely it was due to someone reporting you and therefore you will have a notification around here:
https://steamcommunity.com/id/Honow/moderatormessages/

EDIT:
Oh I see you mean if you removed them before a moderator jumps on them :D nevermind

Thanks for the help! :D
any popular site should be fine as long as you're not linking it for commercial purposes

btw if someone has messaged you asking you to promote their site, it's likely a scam

Nope. Sites associated with phishing are popular, but far from fine.

That's literally not how phishing works...
"Ah yes that site that is known for phishing! *clicks*"

Well, there is long-running sites in the CSGO scene (no idea about Dota 2, wouldn't surprise me though) which are associated with phishing, which do run for long whiles, which Valve started cracking down on in the forum since recently'ish.
I don't understand any of this either. Just like the Chewbacca defense, it doesn't make sense.
Yeah those popular websites are indeed the main reason.

Dozens of threads from people each day, saying their account has been "HACKED!!!!".. even though the only thing they did is sell some skins on a website "everyone" uses.

And because "everyone" is using the website, they assume it's safe. And that it has to be something else that must have gotten their account phished.

They are "popular" in that many people have these kind of sites in their names, and many people think they get free stuff by doing that and/or logging in on said sites.

They dont know they are Scam Sites, and even if they are told so they often refuse to believe it.
