Steam OS 3.0 on Steam Machine?
I have SteamOS 2.0 on a Zotac Xbox Steam machine and was curious if the recovery image could be used to install Steam OS 3.0 on it, or if the 2.0 could be upgraded to 3.0 via an update? I want that sweet Proton compatibility layer.

The recovery image is for the Deck. Wait until Steam OS 3 releases and try it then. But you may run into many issues with older hardware and Intel/Nvidia chipsets vs the all AMD for the Deck.

This older hardware may predate Vulkan support in which case game compatibility would be significantly limited, and in many cases requiring a command line option to prevent Proton from using Vulkan.

As others already said, I wouldn't really recommend it until the full release.

In the meantime though, if Proton is what you're after, just install a lighter-weight version of Linux for now. Install Steam, and set it to boot up in Big Picture mode.
