Retailers choice whether or not to pull them from their stores.

You can purchase Steam funds through CoinStar, too.

Been buying them at my local Dollar General lately as Walmart seems to not have them anymore. DG had 3 left last night I bought 2 of them. I will be checking other DG's around to see if they have any.

Fewer stores are selling physical copies simply because it is so easy to buy online; fewer people are buying them in store. Even when they sell physical cards, often it is online only, and they will mail to you... Not a surprise.

For a few too many large brands to pull out must mean more than the simplicity to order online if this is a sudden move.

Wallet cards are a service provided by the retailer which they ultimately don't profit from as it's a like for like transaction. Renting the Valve-networked compatible ePOS can cost a huge amount of money and with many shops that have their old in-house systems, things like wallet cards can't be integrated in easily and require a separate terminal or network facility that costs extra money. I used to pay £600 a year my old shop just to rent two card payment terminals and it would cost an extra £1800 a year just to rent and install a lottery terminal.

I really hope that physical gift cards remain in some countries that may not have easily accessible payment methods for users but in many Western ones, I expect these to be phased out with alternative means of purchase championed.

Yeah, its an annoying thing for those that don't have other options to lose.
Managers at each place did say that it was a numbers issue.
Though they didn't say what numbers exactly.

I've seen them still in stock at Walmart and GameStop.

this has been driving me nuts. my walmart stopped stocking the cards and now have some qr code they want you to scan that opens up this thing called scan.shop.pay then you take that up to the cashier and they're supposed to be able to put money straight into the steam account. i guess it wouldn't be so bad except that none of the cashiers can get it to work. they really need to get gift cards back into stores somehow.

Gift cards will likely be phased out to make way for more secure and trendy concepts.
