This just happened to me as I exited My Time At Portia- however at the same time on the Downloads bar at the bottom of the page, I had "No Connection" showing (even though my machine is connected to the internet and outside browser pages were working as expected).
I had to wait for Steam to reconnect and re-sync the save. No idea what caused the few other previous occurrences- I did not look to see if steam was showing as connected when they happened. Some were from yesterday, before today's latest Client update.
I tried playing Destroy all Humans this morning - the game crashes once it gets to a sync screen.
Was perfectly fine and playable yesterday.
This pissed me off when it first started happening long ago, and so I made extensive effort to always disable cloud sync anything.
I so wish there was a way to just disable it and keep it off. I can't even refuse to pay for the service since it's forced for free. I just wish for once some company would honor preferences and not override them because they know better based on ignoring the telemetry I can't opt out of providing.
I just want all of the old "cloud saves" ERASED and never reintroduced to a PC again unless I go out of my way to enable syncing, and then maybe have an enhanced option of "sync to this device only" so that the progress on other machines that totally aren't sharing the save games don't end up overwriting each other because I dared commit the crime of *not* pirating the software to run on multiple PCs.
It's like they have no concept about use case scenarios or contextual awareness of why someone might not want his years of progress ruined due to being automatically placed in the hands of guests who were graciously offered by me the chance to play some games to keep them out of trouble on a differnet computer than the primary one I use for gaming... It used to be that Ok I turn on the console and here do whatever you aren't going to ruin my save game progression.
But now, companies assume everyone wants their data to follow them everywhere and that its convenient for some reason to always have assumed preferenced forced down regardless of hardware, circumstance, connectivity, intention or reasoning or even who is pressing the fire button. Not like they even ask for such preferences.
But that's just me whining. My real gripe is that progress is lost because they think that I made a mistake when I disabled the cloud sync across everything I own. I'll turn it on when I want it on, and for the love of anyone that is lovely, I sure hope they introduce that 'sync on a device basis' option so that perhaps I can sync the deck and only the deck and nothing else and never risk progress loss on my real computers because I dared let some kid of a friend of mine's play a game on the deck and have him proceed to screw everything up and it get saved and synced automatically to the hardware I thought was safe.
