Is The FPS Counter Accurate?

I was trying to get an idea of the frames per second for games I play and I found out via a tutorial that going into Settings on Steam you can display an FPS counter that overlays on the game you're playing. I had also tried doing this via NVidea Gforce but I couldn't find the Share option so I tried to use Steam's FPS counter. I tried something simple like Luxor HD expecting 60fps but when I played it I was getting around 160fps.

I thought this was weird so I tried something a little more intensive I have installed like Team Fortress 2. Yet again when I play it I'm getting an FPS of around 127fps or something. Is that accurate? I haven't tried my Mega Drive Collection on Steam yet but those games are like 60fps so if I used the counter with those games it should be 60fps correct?

Use RivaTuner for best results and the option to list more stats in its overlay.

But I just needed to know if the Steam counter is accurate in its results. Are the results I'm getting for something like TF2 correct?

It's accurate enough for me. OR at least I've never had any reason to question its accuracy.

Just checked with other games and indeed it is. Dungeons & Dragons collection runs at 60fps and (unfortunately) Ghostbusters Remastered runs at 30fps. I have no idea why Sabre Interactive made the remaster run at 30fps, that's kind of sad.

Most console games run locked at 30fps because people buying there prefer the power to be dedicated to the graphics rather than the framerate and not every company feels the extra work to make a second version for PC that is unlocked is worth the time and effort.

Might be an engine limitation. Many games are fps limited to prevent bugs.

Honestly the counter is so small that i just use Fraps or Rivatuner.

Check the in game graphics options for Ghostbusters Remastered. There's an option in there that limits your FPS to 30, and it's on by default.

Yeah, i'm just used to having HWinfo running all the time and tabbing out to check. Only time i check my fps is because the game doesn't feel smooth or stuff like that.

Reading this https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/3183485686842433642/ and testing out various games to see how much RAM they're eating up is fun. I got up to 28GB playing Icarus and quite a few open world games like Assassin's Creed eating up about 17GB.

why shouldn't it be accurate?

if a games caps the FPS to 60, then it stays at 60 (if your hardware can hold it). If a game doesn't limit the FPS it can go to thousands..

Maybe have a read about it..

First time using a frames per second counter so wasn't sure.
