Steam Client official minimum system requirements
Where can I find the minimum sys req?

I tried to run it on an Athlon XP, but Steam is crashing due to illegal instruction. I guess SSE2 is needed. Then why is it listed on the hardware survey? I mean if it is a minimum requirement, then of course that 100% of the users have it.

The Linux Client requires SS2 since the beginning, but now it seems that the Windows Client needs it too. In the past, it wasn't required.

HW survey:

They took down the page for the requirements a year ago. But you can find some information here.

SSE2 got released almost 2 decades ago.
With that out of the way, it's used to be optional so it used to be listed. Delisting it is an additional piece of work which may or may not pay off.

That's also true for a lot of games. Why is it needed to have a modern CPU with SSE2 to be able to run a game which requires only a Pentium 1?

Yeah, it must be a helluva work.

It's not. If you still got that Pentium box on your desk, use that to play that game.

But it won't start if Steam is not running due to Steam's copy protection.

Who is talking about Win XP? You can run Windows 7 SP1 without SSE2 if you don't update it.

Since the game in question was released before Steam, you can play it without Steam.

False. You can't play Counter-Strike: Condition Zero without Steam.

Portal doesn't run on a Pentium 1.

OK, actually you can run Portal without Steam by running via hl2.exe -game portal

But then there is Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. Although that doesn't run on a Pentium 1 either, but it runs on a Pentium 3 or on an Athlon XP perfectly well, but since you cannot start Steam if the CPU lacks of SSE2, you can't play it anymore.

You can't run such ancient systems online anyway, you need an OS getting security patches which Windows XP (which the game is specified for) ain't getting.

And if you're really still got your P3 box with XP on it, you still got the last Steam version supporting XP on it. Pentium 4 got released before Steam did, by the way. If you're really that much into museum-grade hardware, hafe fun. Just don't pretend for Steam to be a useful vehicle for your retro needs.

That, and who the ♥♥♥♥ cares about CZ?

I care about CZ, I want to play it against bots on Windows 7. The PC is restricted to Steam via a firewall, NAT is turned on and it is on a VLAN separated from everything else.

Where? I don't have it. Is it downloadable from the official Steam website? By the way, I'm using Windows 7, CZ runs fine on Win7.

Curious what your end goal is? You’ve been talking about this AMD and SSE2 topic since 2017/2018. Are you just trying to run Steam or some games on old hardware for the fun or it?
