Why does running steam in the background...
Eat up so much CPU and memory resources?

Uninstalling steam finally let me run a UE5 project without crashing. Quite amazing how much more smoothly my PC runs without it on my machine.

It’s just you and your potato. I run Steam in the background while crypto mining and it barely uses any.

I could comment a lot on your choice of using a CPU for cryptomining, but considering I didn't include my specs, but did include the ability to run high end game engines, should make it clear there is no potato.

Note if your UE5 project is crashing steam isn’t causing that

Currently Steam uses 0.1% of my CPU being idle. Takes up about 75 MB RAM in total.

It has zero impact on my PC or whatever program I use.

So calling it a bit bs that Steam is the problem on your PC.

Steam will only really use your cpu

1) if games are being patched
2) you have videos on auto play and have a store page in focus

% is relative.
It definitely takes more than 75mb ram.

About the project, it should run with something else running.

What exactly is using up all those ressources? Steam got a couple of processes, please check which of those it is.

When my Steam does nothing and just sits in the background. It takes VERY little RAM.
When I have it open it might go up to 160 MB.

0.0% to 0.1% of CPU, and up to 145MBs of resources. Seems like a very insignificant amount of resource and cpu consumption to me.

Steam doesn't do this though.
It's not how Steam works.

This is why we can't have fast software nowadays

1.Computers are so powerful, developers choose not to pay attention to optimizations

2. PC elitists defending developers, blaming the user for having "old" hardware

Steam being active destroys my MAC but my PC can take it just fine

Steam is currently using 1GB of memory idling in my library.

If you need the resources for something, why not just CLOSE all the programs you're not using? Uninstalling seems quite drastic when you can just close Steam.

Then again, given the recent posts by the OP, this is more of an attempted dig at Steam than anything else.
