Playstation 4 Controller

I might just be a bit thick here, it has been known, but I am having trouble with my PS4 controllers on Steam/PC.

I have connected my PS4 controller to Steam via bluetooth, which was fairly straighforward, but when I do, it turns my PS4 on as well, then when i finish using it on steam, I can't use it with my PS4, not even to turn it off, I have to re-pair it with my PS4 by resetting it, and plugging it in with a cable, before I can use it on the PS4 again.
I assume I am doing "something" wrong, as this seems a bit counter productive to me.

Should I be unplugging my PS4 from the mains before using the controller on Steam/PC?
Do I have to disconnect it from bluetooth on my PC when i finish using it?

Surely there is a simple solution to this that I am just missing. It's probably just me and old age.

If PS4 is plugged in and in standby or on then you'll have that issue because they're linked. Either unplug PS4 or flip a switch. Personally, I use a switched surge protector so I can just switch one plug at a time.

After you finish on PC you can either disconnec it via Steam or us the BT icon on taskbar or notification Quick actions. Personally I don't have BT on my taskbar and use the Quick actions BT switch.

Once disconnected from PC turn PS on/plug it in and they you can turn DS4 on and it'll connect to PS4.

I couldn't be bothered with all that myself. I just inserted a pin in the back of the DS4 to reset it. The connected it to either the PS4 or PC. Never both. I'm only playing one game with the controller anyway so don't need it connected to both at the same time.
