Question about steam points.

Hello everyone, i wanted to ask if this is a bug or if steam is just so greedy.

I got a profile badge from a friend that cost 4800 steam points. I only got 1600 points from it. Steam has deducted 3200 points for your work? 120 Steam Points = 1€

I just can't believe it. This is a rip off!

300 award = 100 points, 600 = 200...
original points / 3 = your points after 14 days

So for a 4800 points expensive award you only get 1600 points after 14 days?

that's right 2400 = 800, 1200 = 400, 600 = 200, 300 = 100

Steam should be ashamed of such a rip off! 120 points cost 1€. The only winner in this run is steam.

well, u can buy those awards, there is "Steam Trading Cards Group", u can find 300 award for 60-100 gems, that is not so expensive, 4800 award ~ 1000-1600 gems

or try to write a nice review and try to get those awards from reviews

Well I would disagree. For one points are worthless. You're not buying points, you're buying games, and you get points as a bonus to spend on other things that have no monetary value.

You're free to decide how you want to spend them. Whether you buy items off the point shop, or let the points sit on your account, it doesn't really matter. Steam isn't losing anything or gaining anything from how you spend, or choose not to spend the points.

Steam points are free, you cannot buy them. Just like with any virtual currency there has to be a sink or cost associated with them. If there was no fee for awards people would just spam each other with awards all the time back and forth.

One reason is to prevent someone from moving all their points from one account to another (like after they get some kind of ban). It also kills any real monetary value as it would almost certainly be cheaper to just buy something then try to buy them from another user (which leads to scams).

what? the points are a bonus and they even went so far as to give points to the person getting the award.

someone spent points they got from a game to give you an award and you get to get points from that (edit:at least i think that is how this is working)

how the hell is that a greedy scheme?

someone spent points they got from a game to give you an award and you get to get points from that (edit:at least i think that is how this is working)

Sounds like the OP thought it was a way to transfer points which it isnt.

Where are the points for free? If you want to have points you have to buy games for real money or someone will give you a reward. No matter it still cost real money. So if you want to change your profile then you need the steam points to pay for it. Unbelievable that you defend that. I didn't want to transfer any points either, I just noticed how unfair that is.

You get 1/3 if the points spent.

People are farming awards through meme guides and other content. There is even an active trading system users have to get awaards/points for gems.

You buy games because you want to have the game. Not because you want points.
If you buy games just to get steam points you are the only one to blame, period.
Steam Points are a bonus so you can award other users for their content or buy profile decorations for yourself. Thats it.
If you would get the same points for awards as you pay for them then they would be totally meaningless.
Everyone would just spam each other with awards nonstop.
The point is that its supposed to be a reward for good content and costs the one awarding a bunch of points. So you really just give awards to stuff you really think it deserves it, if at all.

Consider it this way.

A user spends 4800 steam points to give someone an award. The cost to do that is

2800 points for the award graphics
1000 points to actually do the award process
1000 points to gift some points, this case 1600, to the users who got awarded. Consider it a gift tax if you want.

If you don't like it don't award people. It's like that to reduce/eliminate point moving abuses.

Again points are free with the game, your not buying points. Just like with any freebie they have no value.

Also again, its so people can't just spam awards back and forth. If there was no fee every post would have thousands of awards as everyone would just spam them
