Is Steam Guard code really random?
I just got a Steam Guard code to my email when logging onto Steam on a new computer (my work laptop).

The Guard code was DTM83.

DTM (Don't Tell Mama) is a famous gay bar in Helsinki, Finland, and I was born in 84 (my big brother is born in 83).

Is the Guard code really a random string consisting of A-Z and 0-9, or is there something else going on here?

It's completely random, you're bound to see something that may resemble something which in reality has nothing to do with anything because it's randomized, timing can sometimes have random stuff that may or may not have meaning to someone just by making them remember things unrelated to the code.

I've had all 5 be the same character before
Is this some new conspiracy theory?

Well why don't you watch the Steam Guard codes cycle for a couple of hours and come up with a theory about coded messages, or specific cultural references, that Valve is hiding in Steam Guard codes?

Coincidence doesn't mean anything. Just because you can match some random bar to a random string of letters means nothing.

For instance WQT02 could probably be some random radio station that someone knows who played a their favorite song in 2002.

It's pseudorandom, but is not guessable

sounds like a lot of fun... but wont this advice get people locked out their accounts

Apophenia

- is the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things. The term was coined by psychiatrist Klaus Conrad in his 1958 - wiki

but...
your brain actually has to do patterns of thinking with related things also
so you can do things like counts and follow recipes and sequence of events
like put on socks put on shoes ties shoe laces... - me

If it one day returns the word "TRUMP" or "BIDEN" the internet will burn down.

Should've been DMT88
Joe Rogan did DMT

It you use the mobile app no, as it continually cycles through codes when it's open.
That's just your brain trying to see patterns (something it's trained to do)

These algorithms usually have a word blacklist, to avoid generating swear words for example. It's unlikely you'll see common words or names on a Steamguard code
You're reading too far into it.
Just looking up "DTM", here's a bunch of other possible meanings I've found:

- Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters
- Doing too much
- Digital terrain model
- Difficult to manage
- Design to manufacturing
- Deep tissue massage
- Data transfer module

It's just 3 random letters that don't mean anything in particular without context.
