Steam Refuses to Launch in Linux anymore
So, ever since I reinstalled my installation of Linux Mint, Steam has been broken. It used to work fine, but now all it does is open and close. I went ahead and ran it through a terminal, and here is the output.

Running Steam on linuxmint 19.1 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically Pins up-to-date! [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Startup - updater built Jul 17 2019 06:13:47 SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred X Error of failed request: GLXBadContext SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 155 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext) Value in failed request: 0x0 Serial number of failed request: 48 xerror_handler: X failed, continuing Major opcode of failed request: 155 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 6 (X_GLXIsDirect) Serial number of failed request: 49 xerror_handler: X failed, continuing Looks like steam didn't shutdown cleanly, scheduling immediate update check [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Checking for update on startup [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Checking for available updates... [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Performing checksum verification of executable files [2019-07-26 21:11:37] Verification complete

The flatpak version runs fine, though it is limited in the sense that I can only use a single drive to store my games, and cannot make desktop entries. If anyone else has had this issue, do let me know.

Missing 32 bit libraries?

I've seen a couple of people on mint forums mentioning they had to install an older 32bit nvidia driver, as their latest driver doesn't have a 32bit version (apparently).

It's been suggested to use

sudo apt-get install libnvidia-gl-390:i386

I'll give it a go. I recently distro-hopped back to Mint after driver complications with Debian, so I could very well be missing that package.

This sorted it for me with nvidia-430. Thanks for the tip.

I have the both 64 and 32 bit installed but still same error

sudo aptitude search ~i | grep -i nvidia-gl iB libnvidia-gl-440 - NVIDIA OpenGL/GLX/EGL/GLES GLVND libraries and Vulkan ICD iB libnvidia-gl-440:i386 - NVIDIA OpenGL/GLX/EGL/GLES GLVND libraries and Vulkan ICD

Output is

I had the same problem. for whatever reason the MINT driver utitility offered the nvidia driver-BLÖB "nvidia-driver-440-server Version 440.95.01-0ubuntu0.18.04.1" as recommended. Which I selected foolishly.

Further down in the list is "nvidia-driver-440 Version 440.100-0ubuntu0.18.04.1". Do note the actually slightly higher version number and the lack of "-server". Selecting this version of the nvidia blob and rebooting solved the error message. Unsurprisngly a server version does not play well with Steam. ;-)

Worked for me too with nvidia-460. Thanks!

I checked and noticed `glxgears` was indeed NOT working. I checked my drivers. I was using `nvidia-driver-460`
I thought, Okay, that should be fine, but lets try this...
I switched to `nvidia-driver-460-server`, clicked apply, did not even have to restart. glxgears worked. Steam does an update check and exits.

Will re-start and follow up with status

Running from terminal, I see the following output:

Following-up:
I also installed the i386 libs for my current driver with
sudo apt install libnvidia-gl-460:i386
Then restarted.
The proprietary drivers window now shows that I'm using a 'manually installed driver' and Steam now launches successfully!:steamhappy:

I suddenly faced the same issue on openSUSE Leap 15.3 - after _some_ updates steam app started to crash at startup. I found it was exactly that 32x issue related to nvidia user space libs.

In my case installing of nvidia-computeG05-32bit, nvidia-glG05-32bit and x11-video-nvidiaG05-32bit solves the issue even without restart

However, I wonder - how it was working before? I used this installation with steam for more than a year without changes, I have never installed those 32 bit libs explicitly before, but everything was working perfectly until the last week.
