What do you get if you buy a soundtrack on Steam?
I googled this but couldn't find an answer. If I but a soundtrack on Steam, what exactly do I get? Is it tied to Steam so I can only listen to it through Steam? I want to be able to put it on my phone, USB drive that I keep in my car, etc. What format are they? Mp3, wav, flac?

You can listen it where ever u want to listen or any devices or any player. There's no restriction.

MP3, WAV & FLAC is most common & that's what they used here.

You can play the tracks on other media players outside of Steam as well. Windows media player for instance, or transfer them to your phone. I'll leave that up to you to Google to find instructions, but there are a number of threads and guides about how to do it here on Steam.

The OSTs from The Long Dark came with me to many chemo sessions and got me through many long sessions and hard times there. And got other patients and medical staff at the oncology center interested in the game as well.

At first I thought you were asking a trick question until I read the rest.

Go here.
https://steamdb.info/

Copy store page URL, paste it into the search on the site for steamdb, this will show you more info about the soundtracks, to the left you see "depots" click on that, then click on number ID for the product, then shows you what comes with the product you buy/downloading.

Screenshots to show you example.

You often also get to see an image to the music on your game page, in your Steam Library. At the same place as where your review and screenshot also is displayed. Somewhat above it. Listed as additional content. You can click that image, and the soundtrack should play, if you get a soundtrack for a game you have.

How do I know, from the Steam client, if FLAC is an option?

I think mine are all MP3s, so I don't know how to download the FLAC versions. Does it popup a dialog or is it some setting I need to change?

You get whatever the publisher has uploaded. If the publisher uploaded MP3, you get MP3. If the publisher uploaded FLAC, you get FLAC.

I see. When you download it, it downloads everything. If they have MP3 and FLAC, you get both.

I have a couple with soundtracks listed, but when you download, nothing shows up. Weird. Those are Oil Rush and Runbow.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
