Again, this thread has nothing to do about needing to reenter information in, this thread is about Steam being too nosey by asking for information they don't even need in order to make a purchase. Saving information isn't going to solve the issue the OP and his friends have with needing a phone number, their issue is that Steam requires the phone number in the first place. To them Steam requiring this information Steam don't need crosses the line, and they are free to feel that way.
So yes, you have entered your phone number in, and you saved the information so you don't have to reenter it every time, but you do have phone number on file with Steam so you can make purchases, without that information Steam would stop you from buy a game.
There is no grandfathering in. If you look at the check out page, like I shown in mine, you'll see your phone number there. If it is not there, and you try to make a purchase it will refuse to process the payment.
If you had Steam guard mobile enabled or your number attached for something like Dota 2 match making before the change, yes, that info would be stored for when you make a purchase.
Yeah, don't believe you at all. My information on Steam is more than 6 years old, the saved information doesn't even have a phone number, I had to enter it in because when I didn't it refused to process the payment.. You have your phone number with Steam.
And thats just because of the new bank laws. Before that even became a thing, I just normaly just pay it directly on steam with no extra needs of confirmation
This is called fraud, so yeah?
Posting a fake anything for a real purchase using real money going through real banking systems is ... not legal nor safe for your account, so you should really get yourself out of that habit.
I did it when i first joined steam 11 years ago. Since then i only used real info and it's not fraud because it was my cards. I just didn't want to give out my real name and info. So no fraud at all since it was my credit and debit cards.
They need YOUR information.
If you went to a store physically and the cashier asked to see your ID and it did not match information they had on you, they would *call the credit card company* to confirm that it's "yours" - and if it didn't match theirs... the cashier gets a 50$ check in the mail from the credit card company for cutting that card in half right then and there. Because fraud is a thing that actually happens, and that's how it works.
Only issue's I have been having lately are with updates crashing games and Ads being spammed more than ever. I hate what steam is turning into and the way they are acting.
How are crashing games Steam's fault? As for adds, you can disable them in the settings. There is button "Notify me about additions or changes to my games, new releases, and upcoming releases" I haven't had any popup adds.
I have never been asked to see my id for a credit or debit card purchase ever. They don't ask for id in america for credit or debit card purchases. When you swipe your card here it asks for a pin number when you use a debit card or a signature when using a credit card. Never ever have i been carded for making a debit card or credit card transaction. Stores don't have any info on you at all unless you give it to them for their stupid reward points. The only time i was carded when using a debit/credit card was at a bar/beer distributor but that was to make sure i was 21 only.
In reply to those who say steam need it to verify the card company, they don't it's the credit card company that verifies the sale via "Verified by Visa" and it's there I am accepted or rejected. This action has nothing to do with Visa. I don't use my credit cards for purchasing things in stores as I tend to use apple pay and that is setup for my debit cards only as it's quick and simple to get goods from a store.
There is far too much intrusion into privacy that, especially big tech companies seem to be adopting (Facebook mother of this) but that's fora different discussion.
As for cashiers in a Bank you put your card into their reader and use your card pin to verify, or as in the case of one of my bank accounts they issue you a very small machine called pin sentry and you can put your debit card in that and use your pin it will give them a code to go ahead with the transaction.
