How do I stop Steam from auto-updating a game
I'm trying not to update this game because I'm already knowing it's going to break a lot of things and I'd rather avoid that headache. The problem is I've set the game to ONLY UPDATE WHEN I LAUNCH THE GAME, but Steam still starts the update download every time I start Steam and after I download something else it'll automatically start the update download on the game I'm trying not to update. How do I put a stop to this!!

I'm already knowing eventually I'm going to either step away or when I'm not be paying attention for a few min it's going to download behind my back because my mind is not on babysitting an update. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Ask the developers to make seperate branches of the game so you don't have to update.

The developers are forcing the update, not Steam.

Not true. Steam use to have disabled auto up date but it was removed.

Untrue - Steam has NEVER had a disable auto-update function.

It previously had "Do not automatically update this game" and Steam would not download the update UNTIL you pressed play then the update would be downloaded.

"Do not automatically update this game" was renamed to "Only update this game when I launch it" to stop confusion.

More importantly Steam is built around the CORE functionality of keeping your players up-to-date with the latest build of your game. Whether you have a small bug you need to fix or a major content addition, Steam has a robust set of tools to announce your update and get it into the hands of your players.

Even if I did ask I doubt they'd listen. Therefore

Play offline.

Disconnect from the internet.

Keep a backup copy of the game folder via copy, paste NOT the backup option provided which after reinstall would auto update.

Such a defeatist attitude.

This is a clear issue with the Steam client, I've open an issue report here if you want to share your feedback about the topic:

It's a known glitch that crops up occasionally. It may likely have something to do with a corruption of the settings file you have. There are those of us who have never had this issue. But it is known that every so often STeam will forget certain settings.

Actually Steam did used to have an option to disable updates. I too want that back again.

No it never had that option as I already explained.
