Just like with any other MMO, it's saved online.

ah ha. I was scouring my PC and was like cant find it anywhere. I thought maybe the userdata folder...i know its an mMO as i enjoy playing it. Thanks :)
There are files that you can back up that save such things as which chat tabs you have and the way you arranged things on your HUD:

AppData\Local\Funcom\SWL\Prefs

I used to have to back them up because they would get corrupted when the game crashed and lose my settings.

mmm i thought the save game file would be on the PC, either that of their end on the server

MMOs don't have "save files"? It's an online only game is it not? Anything with a specific server like that will only ever save *parts* of the game on your hard drive, and any valid and important data regarding progression, and often things like combat coding, on the server side.

If the player had easy access to some of those things, the cheating that would go on in multiplayer games would be disastrous.

Thanks. i was hoping a simple save file in case they updated the system and we lost all our progress

That's one of the things about MMOS that is "you gotta take what they give you" unfortunately. If you're on a stable server, and the game's not in a mode that is at risk (such as being suddenly shut down, i'm looking directly at you city of heroes) your data should be fine for the duration. Generally if a developer makes dramatic changes they will offer the players some form of in-game compensation such as a respec for the characters, or items for use.
