Steam on Chromebook through Linux Error

So... I got so far as I installed Linux... downloaded and installed the steam_latest.deb ( from inside my Linux files folder ), and it appeared to install correctly ( I think )...

Upon trying to run all I get is "Fatal error: Steam needs to be connected to the internet. Check blah blah blah" ( or something to that effect )

I'm not super familiar with Linux, so I dunno what is wrong. Internet is connected and working fine...

Anyone come across this problem, or have any ideas?
