I want to use proton on non-steam game.
I have had great success with proton experimental. I want to buy a game I cannot get on steam. Am I able to buy the game then link it to steam so I can run it on proton?

When you add game as non Steam game, it will allow you to use features with it, such as overlay, added controller support, and even proton.
