They did that to accounts that abused the exploit to get free games.
Contact EA support.
I have bought my games to my library with hard earned money.
I have bought Crysis bundle back in 2013. Now cd-key is disabled from first game.
(You can try downloading cd-key if you have this game)
So for the moment EA has deactivated the visibility of CD keys for those titles on Steam.
If you contact EA they will give you a free Origin key for the game , after that link your Steam account with your Origin account.
Then the games work again. Its only a few older titles that did not use ORIGIN as secondary DRM like all the new EA games do.
For example Dead Space 1+2, Crysis 1 and a few others. Newer EA games need a ORIGIN connection in any case so they are not affected.
If you already have your Steam account linked to your ORIGIN account from before then even those old games work fine. Crysis runs without problems for me, same for Dead Space 1+2.
Because i linked my ORIGIN account years ago with Steam.
I am Steam Linux user and I will never open an Origin account.
Like i wrote it works fine for all users who linked their ORIGIN account to their STEAM account in the past.
Dead Space 2 starts without problems for me right now and i did not play it in 3 years.
But it was already linked to ORGIN. Thats why i said contact EA, they will give you a free ORIGIN key, activate that on ORIGIN and then link that account to your Steam account.
Then the STEAM version will also start normal again.
Or wait till they fixed that exploit leak but i suspect they will just force a ORIGIN link for all their titles on STEAM since all newer ones already use it.
Dont get me wrong, EA should DEFINITELY be clearer about all this and communicate to their customers when this will be fixed. Just being quiet about it till you contact them is not ok.
At least a warning about it on the store page that you need to link an ORIGIN account.
This fiasco is THE reason why I have always avoided third party subscriptions, Origin, Ubisoft etc and picked games that are only linked to Steam.
On all of my EA games that have that functionality I can still see my product key and they normally run with my Origin and Steam account as they did for years now
Unless this is a temporary solution from EA they are breaking the Steam rules and possibly even laws. They can't just slap on a 3rd party account on a game that was sold without it.
What you discribe seems to be completely different from the topic actually...
The topic says that there was this "Product Key" feature back in the day for Origin-DRM games and now there is no such feature anymore and you are talking about a game that was non-Origin-DRM but all of a sudden is
I never did the exploit at all. So it has nothing to do with that.
Its common sense to use an system for your own advance. If my ATM gives me 500 instead of the 50 i requested then its their responsibility and problem not mine. Maybe instead of blaming the users who simply used the "given opportunity" how about blaming the braindead EA staff with no common quality control before releasing it to the public. And this isnt some small company its an multi billion company. And when your "legally purchased" key gets rewoked, regardless of platform you do have ground for your money back. The key is the actual value not the data itself.
This happened at my place in the UK, ATM machine was broken and was giving out double the amount of money you asked for. The people who did this got the money took out of their balance later on. So it ended up being a waste of time. I'm guessing the banks followed the law, It probably depends on what nation you're in though in that situation. (the money wasn't off their statement until later , so the bank did it on purpose)
Rather than “common sense,” that’s terrible advice.
And it’ll absolutely be your problem if you’re caught out doing so.
