[QUERY] Steam Chat vs Discord : Steam
Why do people use Discord when they have Steam Chat?

I got curious when I noticed game developers on Steam sending Discord group links.

Why didn't they setup a Steam Group Chat?

1. Is it because Steam is more/less secure?

2. Is it because they don't know about Steam Chat?

3. Is it because Discord is better than Steam Chat?

4. Is it because Steam Chat isn't as cool as Discord?

"Quality and Security
Steam voice chat was rewritten from the ground up with a new WebRTC-based backend. As a result, voice chat uses high quality Opus encoding, voice traffic is encrypted, and all traffic is sent through Steam servers rather than directly to peers. This keeps your IP address private, which masks your physical location and also prevents network attacks."

I prefer Steam chat myself, but my friend forced me onto Discord, I guess he was ahead of the game because around that time Steam Chat calls started glitching for me, I'm still dealing with bugs for messaging.

Discord has more features than Steam Chat.

Also, Discord doesn't require a Steam account to use.

Furthermore, everyone and their mom has a Discord account and in some cases even a Discord server or two these days. It's very much not just a thing gamers use.

AFAIK Discord is being used because it's the Hot Thing ATM. Hell, even I've met people who don't know you don't NEED Discord to talk over the internet. It's like the 90s all again, when people were saying "use Firefox, it got tabs". Yeah, well, other browsers got tabs too, but that seems to be widely unknown.
Hell, there's people not knowing about TeamSpeak, Skype, all that stuff. It seems that ATM, Discord got the by-far loudest proponents.

There are bugs on Steam Chat?

Hmmm... Perhaps, I don't chat as much using Steam Chat.

Yes, right now it's predominately texts/friends not loading and sent messsges being sent but then disappearing and not actually being received by the other person

Likely a combination of more features on Discord and it being a general chat service and not a specific service related one (like Steam chat.

I think I'm getting old, neither my wife nor I have an account there. :lunar2019grinningpig:

I'm just curious why the developers prefer using Discord instead of Steamchat.

Does Steamchat suck?

Developers release games not only on Steam. By using Discord, they can chat with people who buy games on all stores and platforms.

To me it wouldn't make sense if a developer or publisher would divert all traffic to Steam chat. It makes much more sense to use a service that has a wider reach.

Ah.... But why Discord?

Why not setup their own forum?

Discord is easier and doesn't require a website or as much knowledge. It has lots of features like being able to create different channels, set up announcements, etc. All features that steam group chat doesn't have and to be honest doesn't need.

People already answered most questions. As to why not setup their own forum. The counter question: Why setup your own forum when you can use discord that's already setup for you.

No work, don't need your own hosting, don't need someone to maintain the technical part, don't have to pay for said hosting.

Also moderation is a lot easier on discord for larger groups compared to steam chat due to the provided tools.

This sounds a lot like your other topics where you ask weird things

Hmmm.. It's not that difficult to setup a forum... However, the hosting might be something that they don't want to pay for....

Moderation is easier on Discord?

How so?

Hmmm.... A peculiarity... I wonder why Steam chooses not to do the same thing?
