what happens if i accept a gift of a game i already own?

A friend gifted me a game. At the time he made the purchase i didn't own it.

Moments later i purchased the game. I saw the gift email from him seconds later.

SSo now i own the game in my libraty and have a gift email in my inbox. I believe i can reject the gift and he'll get a refund. But what happens if i accept? do i get a copy of it in my inventory i can re-gift? or does it get lost to limbo?

You won't get a second copy. It won't disappear either (assuming it's the same edition). You won't be able to accept it.

The person gifting it to you wont be able to as he selects yoru name Steam will point out you already own it so he cant gift it to you.
I would question who is gifting you a non a Steam .
Is it don't starve together by any chance as there was a free expansion to it from Steam recently.

You can't accept it. Games haven't been available in the inventory for quite some time now.

It was a valid gift. Like i said he sent me the gift but i then bought it before i noticed the gift email.

As the others said once i tried clicking on accept it would not let me accept and decline was the only option. So it was successfully refunded back to my friend. thanks.

You could have also just refunded your purchase and accepted the gift.

What if he hides the game in his library like makes it to private? Does Steam still points out that he owns the game this way?

No. It will let you send the gift but they can only reject it.
