To prove it's you means to provide proof of ownership. That isn't instant and would only create an extra burden on the support system. Heck, if you properly transfer the authenticator the holds is quicker done than when you have to wait on response from support.
A system like this is easier to manage. Keep in mind that not everything has to accommodate you, it has to accommodate all party and security factors.
