Birds (stickers) and Winter Sale
I don't get the link between birds and winter/holidays/yuletide/christmas/new year/... Am I missing the point or is it just random like e.g. summer sale and fish?

Birds in the snow is a classic winter image

:lunar2019grinningpig: Sure, and fish in a pond are a classic summer image when taking those long walks through the park, so next summer during the sale the theme will be fish :lunar2019grinningpig: I can match any two unconnected things in some way when necessary. This still doesn't explain the match Valve apparently made between winter sale and birds, though :Winking:
Don't most birds fly south for the winter anyways?

As I said it is a commonly used image when it comes to winter. Anything marketed around the Christmas period that isn't specific to Christmas will most likely be landscape and nature = birds in snow. Not hard to see how they made that connection. :tank::steamhappy:

Just do a Google for "Birds in the snow". You'll see lots of lovely pictures.

Dear gods :steamfacepalm: Sure, and if I google 'kids in the snow', 'dogs in the snow' or 'trees in the snow' I get tons of results as well. Still doesn't explain it. You can pretty much put anything in snow that isn't very hot but that doesn't mean there's an inherit link between the two. Googling 'dogs with sunglasses' or 'dogs with funny hats' yields hundreds of results as well, but it doesn't mean there's a link between the two that's logical to have a Steam sale centered around them :steamfacepalm:

From the blog post:
Grab your Holiday Gifts

This year we’ve teamed up with artist Eric Nyffeler, to help us create the Winter Sale theme, the Seasonal Profile, and... bird stickers!? Why birds, you ask? To that we ask you - why NOT birds? Claim a free animated bird sticker (each inspired by a popular game on Steam) every other day of the sale when you visit the Points Shop, where you'll find other new winter seasonal items.

Have you thought of the possibility that you're just overthinking things and Valve just is having fun with the theme? Which seems to work, since you made this thread.

On 12 Days of Christmas it calls for...
7 Swans a Swimming
6 Geese a Laying
4 Calling Birds
3 French Hens
2 Turtle Doves
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

That's 23 birds in just one song (verse)... more if you include all the repeats (in the song).

Bird's mark the start of winter in general.
I just saw a dead bird on a table earlier, what a way to go.
As a kid your taught to look out for and feed them in the winter, here anyway.

Because Gabe was sitting in the office pondering what to to do for the Winter sale. He looked out of his office window, saw a bird and said, "There we go."

Birds have been a common theme on Christmas cards for a long time.

Strange, we have birds all year round in Europe. If anything, we have less birds in wintertime than in all the other seasons :virus_confused: :LostTechnology_Confusion:

Really? Mkay, I googled 'christmas card' and checked the images. Sure, I see a few (no more than 5) cards that have bird on it. The following animals are apparently shown a lot more often on Christmas cards than birds: cats (WAY more often), hedgehogs, squirrels and raindeer/moose. And those are just the animals. Other things are a LOT more often pictured on Christmas cards than birds. So next year the theme for the winter sale will be cats then, I suppose.

This seems more plausible, indeed :Winking: People love seeing connections when there are none.

Ah well... Anyway: a merry, bird-rich Christmas to everyone! :redcrow: :xmas_tree: :snowflakes: :present_emo:

I also had no idea what the relation was. I have pet birds; I don't assoicate birds with any specific season since they are year round...
