Point Shop vs Market - when is it worth to buy for points and when on market?
Hi guys,
when is it worth to buy for points and when on market? Is there any price limit for you where you decide?

eg. for Profile Background (500 points)

thanks

Points Shop items aren't tradable/marketable. Take that into consideration too.

Some items are only available on the Points Shop.

And if I have extra points to spare, why waste the money, right?

When it's an item from a game I own, I don't see the point in using the community market. I have points, so why not use them.

And as said, not all items are in both.

If the item is available in both, I say it is better to purchase from market. That way you can get rid of the item later by selling or trading it away.

A) If the said game removed for the emotes/background it has you wanred, the emote/background not on the market, and if you own the said game, you can use the Steam point store to get your emote/background you wanted.

B) If you do not want to spend money on the market place to get the emotes/background, and you own the said game for the emotes/background, then use your Steam point store to get the emotes/background you wanted.

C) If you're crafting badges, and didn't get your emotes/background you wanted, and own the said game, you can use the Steam point store to just get your emotes/background you wanted.

Please note that items you get from the Steam point store can not break into gems, traded, nor sold on the market, they're permanently on your account.

Well that sucks, I thought I might be able to convert them to wallet funds or trading cards for crafting but i guess not.

I have a game the developer/publisher removed (and then re-added as a different app id - but that is another issue) and the points shop still offers their backgrounds etc. I have another game that steam removed and the points shop does not have any of it's stuff...

In my opinion - the best use of the points shop for backgrounds and emoticons - is for rare/pricey ones that trying to get by crafting badges is unreasonable.

Not all games has emotes, and backgrounds. Games that still has their emotes, and backgrounds, and get removed you can still get them via Steam point shop, or whatever was listed on the market before the game got removed, as they lose the market selling option when the game gets removed.

If the same game relist on Steam but under another App ID yea there going to be two sets of them if dev upload same set from last App ID, which really the game dev could've just relisted the old App ID, unless it was removed for certain reasons, and IP exchanging to another person / company for that listing, then make sense why doesn't have same App ID when relisted.

Also it's may be possible for game devs to opt-out their emotes, and backgrounds from marketplace.

Yea for pricey emotes, backgrounds it's best to get them from Steam points shop, the only downside to getting items from Steam points store, is you can not trade, sell, nor break them into gems.

I saw that I could use my points to buy upgrades of my profile (Profile Showcase Upgrades) to show more details on your profile.
So I am glad I asked you guys first and didnt spent them on backgrounds already (many backgrounds are really great, but you can get them from market too)
thanks

I'm curious why these cant at least be broken down into gems, they could bloat my inventory :avgn:

Sack of Gems already had huge issues on the Market. We don't need a repeat.

Since users have abused guides and other content to farm awards, getting points is as easy as making a meme and waiting for the awards to roll in. Then, use the millions of points (yes, some users have farmed that many) to purchase all the items on the points shop and turn them into gems. Then, sell the sacks for 100% profit.

That aside, this is what happened before...

The Market crash after the last event that had gemmable items (Winter 2018) is still making it hard for many to purchase Sacks.

Generating money from nothing. Buy items from the Market, cash out on illicit sites and you have yourself a 2nd income.
