I don't know about Steam, but EA games on GoG all require Origin regardless of release date. I'll never get to play the ones I purchased before the change of policy. Should have downloaded them right away. :(
Its not different to steam.
Browsing games without having to open them one by one to find out if they require an extra DRM bloatware would feel better as an experience.
Might you be confusing this with Steam which does have games that require secondary authentication clients? I know I had that problem with my Steam copy of Child of Light, which requires Uplay, and the Uplay instance of this same copy also in turn requires Steam, which just makes things silly.
