That is a feature for paying customers only.
You could check if those mods are available officially on other mod sites like Nexusmods.
It is probably not legitimate, but there is not much you can do about people copying stuff.
If you want some mods on the workshop, ask the author to upload them here as well, because there are some benefits to having them on the workshop, opposed to some random website.
For example, you can easily share and play them with your buddies, or notify them about the mods through screenshots, without having to send them to a 3rd party website, and download who knows what. A legitimate source should always safe. I am not entirely sure what other websites do with them, or if they add any weird stuff to them.
as mentioned, no you cant get steam workshop stuff to use on gog, workshop is for games installed on steam.
as for downloading "anywhere on the internet" as someone else mentioned, i wouldnt download from random sites, use well known, reputable sites, that have virus scanners and such, so you arent compromising your computer/ect.. for some game mods.
that being said, you could check out nexusmods site and see what mods they have for the game, but while looking, make sure the mods are updated and compatible with the game version, you can also use something like vortex to manage/update/ect.. all mods, for all your games, if you continue using the site for game mods.
Inaccurate, you can download mods from the workshop using third-party sites.
wrong, having "virustotal" api for use on user uploads to the site, makes the site more reputable than sites that dont use scanners, as well any uplouds to the site that are found "unsafe" are quarantines and dont make it to the site for downloading, not including that the administration/moderation is always on top of things.
you can also view the contents of said mod on the page before downloading them and anyone with modding experience or using mods, will know what file types should be in said mods.
go ask anyone who has used the site, if they have gotten any viruses from nexumods, you will likely find zero who have.
i will also add, you can scan a download link itself on sites like "virustotal" or others, before downloading stuff yourself, by simply copy pasting the link (your download should start in a few seconds, if it doesnt please use this link "to start the download" <--- last part being the link) and take that link to the virus scanning site.
tho i will say, nothing is 100% safe and one should always practice safe net browsing/downloading habits on their own, but having other avenues to check things/ect.. before doing a download is always helpful and/or knowing a site is checking them before they are allowed for download on said site.
as for steam workshop content, i would assume steam checks all workshop content, to see if its safe for users.
which is likely a grey area for third party sites to do that in the first place, i highly doubt steam allows or wants that happening, let alone the mod authors themselves, also you have to do much more work on your end to integrate a mod doing that as said mod wont have the api in place to install the mod.
also, im sure most of those sites arent anywhere close to reputable in the first place.
