SOLVED: Steam Client unresponsive / periodically freezing.
Today the Steam UI hsa become extrememly slow and unresponsive. The whole client freezes up for 10-15 seconds at a time (though, any video/game ad's that might be showing continue playing). Select library or store, or any menu options like Steam or View , Friends etc..may work after a few seconds, or often just doesnt seem to regsiter. Then sometimes it will register a whole sequence of selections in one go, or maybe it just wont and will appear like I havent tried to select anything.

I have discovered; uninstalling steam. restarting PC. reinstalling steam (loose the games in the base steam library, but re-adding extra libraries discovers thoes games fine)

..eveyhting appears fine.

reboot PC, on startup steam updates itself, .. aaand back to running really badly / freezing / pausing UI etc..

A visible example of the freezing/unfreezing effect ocurrs on the download screen. The blue bar graph for network speed show two full bars->blank space>two bars->blank space->etc..

Anyone got any ideas?

So I shut down steam and looked into the steam logs directory, at content_log.txt

It had lines saying;

Failed to write app state file "L:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\appmanifest_427520.acf" (662 bytes)

I went into that libary folder, and there were a bunch of appmanifest_427520.acf files, with .swp .tmp.swp.tmp etc.. file endings. I opened up the file and noted the game it was referring to.

deleted all the *427520* acf files, deleted the game folder it was referring to from steamapps/common in that library folder.

restarted steam and

Hey presto, everything is working fine and dandy !
