If that were really the issue, then developers would be flocking to Epic and leaving Steam without Epic needing to provide these payouts.
Competition happens at the demand level, not the supply level. If Epic wants to compete, maybe they should create a store that gives people a reason to use it over Steam.
If the shoe were on the other foot and Epic had gone all in on PC game digital distribution in the early 00s earning themselves a dominant position nearly two decades later, they would be fiercely defending their industry standard 30% cut. Epic just wants to be where Valve is without doing the work to get there.
Kena, Chivalry 2 and Darkest Dungeon 2 are timed exclusives, so in that case, yes, they very likely received compensation for that like Borderlands 3 did.
But do we know if Square is getting payed to put Kingdom Hearts or The World Ends with You on Epic and not Steam? To my knowledge, there has been no indication that those are timed exclusives and therefor no reason to assume a deal was made.
How about every new release from Ubisoft recently? Are they timed or not? Because if not, it seems to indicate that Ubisoft simply chose to put them there because of a better revenue split.
People will not skip on Far Cry 6 just because it's not on Steam. Some people will, but Ubisoft likely believes the better revenue split more than makes up for those lost sales from Steam loyalists.
Bro. Tell that to to Jeff Bezos if you want to hear him laugh.
Even if competition only happened on a demand level, you are forgetting the cultural phenomenon that Fortnite was and still is for an entire generation of new gamers. Gamers whose first introduction to PC gaming was through the Epic Games Store, who have no sense of loyalty towards Steam, who are collecting free games weekly and have no reason to see Epic Games in a bad light the way steam loyalists do... You don't think there is going to be fierce competition a couple years down the line with a userbase that massive? This is the calm before the storm.
I agree. It's extremely likely that this would be the case.
And it would be Steam offering free games, purchasing timed exclusives and delivering a more generous revenue split to AAA and indies alike.
If they didn't put in the work, they wouldn't have the ability to compete. Inf act they have to put in more work. When steam started, there was little to no digital distribution so they had it easy.
Epic Games Store entered the market when there was already an industry giant with an insanely large user base with massive libraries on steam, Epic will have to work much harder than Steam does, which is also why their revenue split is more generous.
in other words they fear that the game(gta 6) will not be sucessful and their company's reputation may plummet and go bankrupt or get acquisitioned by an another company . for the first question its all about profit consinder steam has a 30% cut that will be millions of dollars way from company so ubisoft store has no cut and makes sense
We wouldn't have a Far Cry franchise to talk about if it wasn't for capitalism. You'd be lining up for bread instead.
Hard to tell if there's closed door deals being made or what, but from what I've read it seems like Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends with You probably wouldn't be on PC at all if it weren't for Epic approaching them, especially since Square started using Unreal Engine for these games. I've defended these kinds of exclusives in the past, like Bayonetta 2 and 3 wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Nintendo. I think these kinds of exclusives are deserved, and I don't feel salty about them at all.
The ones I take issue with are where Epic looks at the top wishlisted games soon to release on Steam, then they shoot the developer an email saying "Hey. Big sack of money here with your name on it if you ditch Steam." Though I don't blame any developers who do take that deal. Game development is risky and expensive.
I think that money should be better used funding promising studios, indie or AA, and then getting exclusives that otherwise wouldn't happen. Would be more risky and take longer but it would generate a lot of good will towards Epic.
This comment sums it up for me.
I'm not that fussed about Far Cry 6, as they all seem to be the same game from 3 onwards.
I already have enough games that I want to play - So Far Cry 6 not coming to Steam can be seen as a blessing in disguise.
This one has Giancarlo Esposito.
get over it already guys... yes they wanna use the ubi connect launcher anyway .. same was true with FAR CRY 3 , FAR CRY 3 BLOOD DRAGON ,FAR CRY 4 , FAR CRY PRIMAL FAR CRY 5 5 , FAR CRY NEW DAWN
all used the UBI CONNECT or Uplay system to launch your game ON steam ..
UBISOFT LEFT steam over a year ago with all the new titles they made SINCE then
no its not epic blood money paid to UBISOFT it IS the revenue share ..+ many other issues with tech support as yes on many UBI games on steam sets up the game to LOCK you into only buying DLC at an inflated price
even when that DLC can be found online cheaper at many other UBI partner sites or even directly via UBI CONNECT // you wanna say i am a fanboy .. ? what ever // this link PROVE its true

valve changes the save file location on many games to ensure they get a 30% cut of not only the sale of the title but the DLC as well // and again see old pages from even back in 2019 when UBI made the decision to leave steam

think hard about this . before you complain .. would you give 30 % of your pay away for 5 years .of your DEV teams and no its not only one studio its several
.just to sell your product on a site , where may users trash a game that they do not even meet the system requirements to run
oh and yes steam will reduce that to only 20 % after so many copes sole .. but on epic .. they only take 12 %
and on your OWN launcher that no matter why everyone has to use .. you get 100 % of the revenue
and in .. before anyone cries ubi connect or UPLAY SUCKS i never had a single problem with my UBI account ..and yes its over 10 yrs old
WRITE sown your e mail you use and yes use a strong password
just as you would do with any ONLINE account you value
and YES WRITE IT DOWN in a lil book and keep it near or hell even in side your PC
and yea UBISOFT has better support options then STEAM for its games
