I don't think there's that much of a difference considering they're both copies of each other.

VATS obviously doesn't work in FO76 because you can't pause live gameplay. I mean, there is VATS in 76, but it's a shell of what it is in the single player experiences. That's the only real difference to note.

Fallout 76 for me feels more responsive and obviously runs an updated engine.

It's largely the same, except for VATS like others have described (which feels more like a poor auto-aim more than anything). Also, weapons degrade again, just in case you were spoiled by 4 :P.

Not a single Fallout game in eixstence has good gunplay. The classics have some really visceral combat effects, but since they're turn-based "you decide what should be done and see how it plays out", that's not exactly gunplay worth being named such.

If you want good gunplay in a post-apocalyptic open world, Rage 2 (published by Bethesda, BTW) is a way better choice.

Fallout 76 is basically Fallout 4 with a lot of features stripped and multiplayer added. The difference in combat is just mostly VATS because FO76 doesn't let you pause.
