add dlc from other sources?
if l bought a game on steam (lets use sims 3 for a example) could l download a dlc for it from another site and add the dlc to load with my steam game (like how you can "add a non steam game" but its dlc? or just put the dlcs files in its respective steamapps-common folder?

l ask cause l have found a cheaper place to buy the sims dlc,but l want to know if l could use them with my steam version of the game, and not have to rebuy the base game+my dlc.

EDIT:the answer has been...disapointing,but not unexpected. (its a no)

Usually no. It probably is an Origin key.

Only if it's a Steam key.

If the base game is bought on Steam, any DLC has to be a Steam key as well.

First: sorry my bad English, it's not my native language.

Yes you can add dlcs from others sources (stores) but there is a big but on it (not like nicky Minaj but still a big butt )

Singleplayer games are fine, you won't be banned or people will say $h!t to you, for example:
You have fallout 4 on steam and the dlcs on Bethesda's launcher (somehow), you can use the dlcs as mods, like any other mods from nexus.

Singleplayer games with multiplayer you may be banned or called xeater, maybe or maybe not, for example:
You have dark souls on steam and the dlcs on any's launcher( if existed).
You won't be able to comply if fromsoftware ban you, and people can be angry at you because it's unbalanced, you are using something that you shouldn't even if you pay, it's not on steam and it's unfair with other steam users.

Multiplayer games you just can't do that, you will be banned and will be and be called a xeater.

If you buy the game on PC, buy the dlcs and are not harming anyone days.
You are doing nothing wrong, it will work, but not in every game.

They're talking specifically about the Sims, which cannot be varied, and must be purchased at the same source.

They're also talking about DLC, not mods.

But yeah OP sorry but all your game dlc must be purchased in the same system as your base game.

Later he asked for "non sims" dlcs.

And the sims is a game modfriendly,
It's not required a "mod" to mod a game, you just need modify the file structure, just change a txt file to enable vsinc is mod a game.

If you put the dlcs files on the game folder you are changing the original file structure, you mod your game.

The only problem is if you buoyed the game and it's dlcs, in my young age I have modded the sims 2 and 3 a lot.
(Or maybe if the steam version of the sims DRM check all the files before every start)

Again irrelevant, because *they're not talking about mods*. Mods =/= dlc.

Steam lost its license to sell EA games when Original was released, however I believe that EA and steam are working on restoring the license to some of the Origin games, but not all EA games are available on Steam as of yet. I believe the older Sims 3 and Sims 2 are available on both platforms right now, but the Sims 4 is strictly on Origin and that makes sense because its still in development and no need to release it to third parties until they need extra cash. Another issue is games that use other trademarks like John Maddens NFL Football from EA Sports steam needs permission from John Maddens and the NFL to be able to put the game up for sale on Steam.

EA only stop listing games on Steam after Origin release, very few games were delisted off Steam, but those were also not for sale even on Origin as well such some of the Sims games, such as Sims 2, and Sims Movies, and etc...

Steam never own any of the license, they only sell on behalf of EA, Steam is the middle man of stores which hasn't changed since 2005, at any point, and time any publisher, and indie dev are free to stop selling on Steam whenever they want. Origin also a middle man, selling Ubisoft, CDRedProjek, etc, and indie games on their platform as well.

Also I leave this here for you.

It still wouldn't make any difference: the game has to be bought on the same platform as the DLC. Very few games allow dlc to be added from other sources. This isn't new.

Ok, I will change my words, now it's "Install dlc unofficially".
Better? I think my lack of English language makes hard for people to understand me.

Steam will do nothing if you add files to your game, even from other stores, long as it's not multiplayer, you are not allowed to use stuff that you did not buy on steam, but steam or the devs don't check all your games files every time you play a singleplayer game, they can't and won't punish you for that.
Zekiran 16 lutego 2020 o 19:26
"Install mods unofficially" you mean pirate mod content that emulates DLC?

Because NO. that's not okay in any game or on any platform.

Buying a game on Steam doesn't give it to your Origin or Rockstar account. Buying a game on those platforms doesn't put it on steam.

Trying to illegally get around that fact is actual piracy. I'd strongly encourage you to stop advocating that as it WILL lead to a ban.
