People asking me to add them instead of adding me

So, I have some rules for people to add me, which you can see on my profile, but they are lax. Basically, just send me a friend request and a message on my profile as to why. If they don't send the message, I check their level or if they're private. If everything's ok, I accept the request and ask them why did they add me. If it's an scam, or begging for a lot of stuff, I unadd them, plus a report if it's the former. Usually, for any other reason, I just leave them on my friend's list.

Problem is, all of that hangs on one step, people sending me friend requests. But lately, a lot of users have been asking me to send them a friend request. It's not difficult to send a FR, there's a gigantic button. Sure enough, I haven't sent any to them, because A) all of them are level 0 with private profiles, and B) now I'm very suspicious of people asking me to add them.

Has anyone actually done so with any similar profile? And if so, what happened? Another obvious scam, or just an ordinary request?

Could be as simple as people with limited accounts can't send friend requests, but someone with a non-limited account can still add them. Could be that some of those people are just wanting to be friends while others are out to scam you. Could be that some people just don't read or comprehend or follow other's instructions and just do as they please.

It's all up to you what you want to do with them.

Limited accounts can't send friend requests and there is also a daily limit on how many friend requests you send, so it could be one of the those reasons. People posting and asking you to add them could be a scam--it's hard to say for sure. The person you're talking about has about 100 other comments on other people's profiles/content asking to add them. I would steer clear cause that's pretty suspicious to me... What they're doing isn't really against the rules, but you obviously should use common sense

because valve decided to limit friends requests to 30 something a week.
this clearly is affecting a lot of people and not just the bad actors. hence legitimate people that mean no harm or has no malicious intent has to now resort to asking people to add them because their quota is up.

Thanks for the answers, I was not aware that new accounts couldn't send friend requests due to being limited, or that normal accounts couldn't too if they sent too many in a certain amount of time. Then again, the latter case wouldn't apply, since all were level 0, but I'll keep it in mind if an user with higher level asks me to send them a friend request.

About the former, it's certainly troubling that the level 0 account could either be a new user in need of something, or a throwaway scamming account. Matt's comment, thankfully, reminds me that users making the same comment over and over are very probably scammers, so I'd check their message activity. Do you guys know another method with which I could check if a level 0 account is either malicious or just limited?

If its not too many, or under a screenshot, you could ask what they want.
But dont forget to mark them to remove when they dont answer after a while.

Though, i would tend to be suspicious. Its not usual to happen for many to have to ask you to add.

I acepted one of those "i have an important message, add me and stuff" guy. They tell you, that they have sold an item worth 300$ to someone with your profile pic and they didn't get the money. So they reported you accidentally and tell you, you have to write with someone from the steam support team. The Link is probably a fake support guy and i blocked him.

Now they try using Discord to pull the scams and hope they got a match, AND even post a screen shot of your profile page

But I got this user, said person is level 3 and wants me to add him instead of the other way around. And then three awards, Community ambassador unlocked 2/13 at 10:24am, Community patron Unlocked on the same day at 10:15am and one stop shopper on 2/11 at 01:52am.

Something about him is reminding me of the stench from Denmark

The Discord scam has been around since 2018

Things are better now, less people trying to scam me. Whenever I get one of those, I am more aware of the tricks they try to pull off. That said, I've gotten a couple that just were low level people genuinely wanting to trade, I have nothing against that.

And yeah, the Discord one has existed for a while, not that recent. Interestingly, recently the number of people trying to scam me that way is higher than all other methods, probably because I'm increasingly more active on Discord. I used to just ignore and block them, but now I directly call them out. Still those scammers don't look at my profile, even though last year I summarized and was nicer on there.
