Hi, how do I get back my original account from 10+ years ago?
So I used to have an account all the way back from when I played CS 1.6 and earlier, but abandoned it when I didn't have a computer anymore. I've been trying to get access to it but all the "help" i've been given is to try to find my original CDKEY even though it's been over 10 years. My original email account linked to the account is still in my possession but apparently that's not enough to prove ownership. That is BS.

For really old accounts they often require the cd key especially if there is a dispute in ownership (meaning 2 or more people claim ownership). Knowing the email isn't proof because Steam displays email address in many places.

Ok.. but what does the displaying of the email address linked to account have to do with anything? I'm the original owner of the email who set up the steam account. Seriously, why do they expect someone to hold on to their original CDKEY from over 10 years ago? That is highly unlikely. I've owned the same email that was used to set up the steam account so unless my email was hacked I don't see why it is not proof of ownership. This is retarded.

proof with purchace of games . like how paid cc , matching you name ect and detail of how you purchaced games in your account may help. like if you was the real owner ,youd now details of the payment cards you used .

Well, I never bought games on steam, I only played CS 1.6 and DoD before steam was even rolled out. My email is definitely attached to steam, I don't know why that isn't proof... I forgot my password, and while trying to change my password it says to contact support, who in turn want ONLY the cdkey. So why can't I verify with my original email that was used to create the account? this is ridiculous. My email was not hacked and it proves that I am the legitimate owner of the email/ steam account.

This is the support article about proof of ownership:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2268-EAFZ-9762

Take up the discussion with Steam support. This is a user help help forum. The best we can do is point out the policies. You think it's not fair? Tell support, not us. It comes across as you're complaining to other Steam users.

I am wanting to know if anyone has gotten back their old account in any other way besides trying to dig up their old CDkey, because that is ridiculous. I've seriously had that account since CS 1.3...

Also support only says that they'll only reset my password if they get the CDkey, which is ridiculous.

If your question is, "Has anyone successfully recovered a lost Steam account by providing only the email address?" then why not just ask that question in the original post?
sevenp240 Jul 17, 2020 @ 3:40pm
Because that wasn't my question, the question was "attempting a recovery any way besides trying to find the CDkey." Email linked to the account is absolute proof and support is saying no.

From a long time ago OP, someone had your issue he recovered his 2004 account support asked him for a cdkey but he didn't use the first activated cdkey i believe (any) cdkey thats been activated as a Retail game! not online cdkeys you get from bundle sites or 3rd party.

Im not to sure but according to that article support will accept, any previous credit card, paypal, retail keys or wallet codes for account ownership.

i didn't know old steam accounts require futher proof.

thats why its important to keep all your cd keys, wallet codes, credit cards.

Well... That sucks cuz I never bought anything through steam, I only played CS 1.6 and DoD which were linked to the original CDkey before steam was even a product.

What I don't get is why I'm not able to recover the password through email? I used it to sign up for steam and I still have access to it, so why can't I use that?

look a cd key, credit card purchase, wallet code activation is more than enough for recovery according to someone who had ur problem OP he got his account back from 2004 he didnt use his first key activation it was a newer key and got his account.

if you have not purchased with a credit card, wallet code, retail key activation than your account wont be recovered because there is no proof of ownership.

-edit- i use all payment methods for extra security - cc,keys, wallet codes.

Because email is easily hacked. Because obsolete/expired addresses are kept locked for 3 months to a year depending on the host, and then available for anyone to register again. Because it simply does not proof in any way, shape or form that you are the same person as the one who registered that key.

I have copies and keys way older than this and know many people that either keep all their games, or at least the ones they used too create an account. It's not highly unlikely. It's thinking before doing, reading the terms for account recovery before you actually need it and general common sense.

Your account is gone and fortunately, there was little to no value to it other than the age. Learn from your mistake and move on.
If you have access to the email, login with your account name. Forgot password.
Get password from email, and login.
If you need a code, it comes to email as well, if you did not change it.
