I want to buy a game for myself and my friends. The total would be over $30 but I'd have to do it in separate transactions since I can't buy more than one copy of the game at a time. Will I still get the discount if I spend more than $30 over a couple purchases or does it have to be all in one go?

but I have the same problem right now, I can't get one gift, and one game for myself in the same purchase, and also it doesn't seem to be applying the $5 discount for the both of them combined even if I were to send them both as gifts. Lame.

The discount is applied to your first purchase totalling $30 or more, add a few games to your cart and you will see the discount being applied before confirming anything. I don't think gifts count, but I'm not sure.
