Black Bars on the interface
Hello.
Lately i've been getting black bars top and bottom of the window that blocks like 1/4th of the steam window so i cant press friends list and other things on that part of the screen.

It seems to affect starting games that before starting ask like "online mode or Offline mode".
when i start those games it gives me a little black 100x100 window. fortunately i seem to be able to press enter to make it go away and the game starts but it seems to come back occasionally especially after i've used steam full screen mode or played with a controller ?? if that helps in any way?

Just ran into this bug. After restarting my PC, the issue still persisted. Fixed it by forcing Steam to close in the task manager and restarting steam.
yeah, a refrsh seems to fix it.. known bug?
Getting this issue as well. restarting seemed to work for me, might be because of the resolution difference between my laptop and monitor.
This is still happening. Anyone got a fix other than restarting steam entirely?
Same problem, happens since i went to W11
related to sleep?
seems to happen even with my old w10 machine
After the latest steam update, I have the same problem with black bars on the top and bottom. Is there an option to fix this?

Do you have Steam launching on Windows start? I noticed this issue a few months back the solution was to just close and relaunch steam. The only way I could keep from having to close and restart Steam was to just not have Steam start on boot and manually launch Steam

Thanks for posting this comment!

I'm also on Mac & I have the same problem, (black bars on top & bottom). Also, most windows appear to be completely black as soon as I open them.

it's been at least 2-3 weeks now. It seems to have happened after the latest update because it looked perfectly fine before the update. And unfortunately, it doesn't seem like a new update was released for Mac os computers ever since. So I haven't been able to play any of the games I own. This is terribly annoying & unacceptable, no one should have to go through bugs like these.

Please folks any fixes?

No, I don't have Steam launching on boot, I always launch it manually so this doesn't apply to me at all. When will this be fixed?

Just like this wasn't enough, I've been getting a different issue on my Windows 10 computer Desktop, which is that Steam freezes my entire computer every single time I attempt to launch the app. And it's always asking me to login with internet & I'm completely screwed because I no longer get the '"offline mode'' option. It's been like this for the last 2-3 weeks now as well.

And yes I have tried deleting Skype, exclude Steam from my VPN & all the supposedly working solutions. So honestly, I don't know what's wrong with the latest updates but this is very serious & it has to be fixed ASAP!
I see you've mentioned you have a VPN and have excluded Steam in the VPN, have you by chance tried just logging into Steam with the VPN disabled and just using your normal IP address? I understand most people use VPNs all the time regardless but as a troubleshooting method you could try to log in with the VPN off. There may be some kind of interference it's causing even if it's set to exclude Steam. Beyond that I have no other ideas on what you could try. What is your ISP speed by chance? I know back when I had to rely on satellite internet my speed wasn't fast enough to login to Steam because it would timeout during the login.

Thanks for your reply,

Yes this is also something I've tried... (logging into Steam with my VPN disabled) and unfortunately it doesn't change anything in my case as the issue still occurs regardless.

I mean I've had that VPN for a while now & also have had my Anti-Virus for years & this bug has never happened before 2023. This is so weird, I have no idea what to do. I've been spending many hours of my time troubleshooting without any success. :-(

Regarding my ISP speed... It's (451 mbps) for Download & (53 Mbps) for Upload.
It's usually pretty quick because it's directly plugged with an Ethernet cable.

But that is regarding the ''Steam freezes my entire computer'' issue though, not the issue I get with my Mac, (black Bars on top & Bottom + black Windows), which is completely different...

I wish you luck in getting it worked out. Only thing I could recommend at this point would be contacting Steam Support through your web browser and provide screenshots of whatever issues you can and give them in-depth specs for your devices. This is starting to sound like a very specific issue that is only affecting your hardware in particular for some reason.
Thanks again, I appreciate the recommendation. I'll definitely contact the Steam Support. But that will be only regarding the issue I get on my Windows 10 Desktop PC. Though, I still think this should be fixed no matter what specs my PC has... I mean, people don't necessarily have the money to buy a new computer only because of that. I've already upgraded & replaced several parts in the last few years.

I will provide the specs but unfortunately it will be impossible to provide a screenshot of the issue as the entire computer freezes. I guess I could record a video with my cell phone, hopefully they accept these types of files...

Concerning the Mac (black bars at the top & bottom + black windows) issue... It actually was occurring yesterday right before I've posted these comments on here.

But now guess what? I have good news for all the folks who had that same problem because I've just relaunched Steam on my Mac 20 min ago & I was happy to see there was an new update, which finally seems to have fixed the issue on Mac OS! He he...

Let's hope it won't happen again & that it stays this way forever from now on! :steamhappy:
Try disabling "GPU accelerated rendering in web views" in Steam > Settings > Interface. It may (or may not!) help you bypass the problem until Valve gets around to fixing it.
