Sounds to me that it is the uninstaller tools fault. ??

The uninstaller removes everything in the folder it's in.

Why have you installed the Steam client on your desktop? Do you install every other program too alongside its files on your desktop too? Probably not, so please don't from now on.

Now that as interesting issue..

I have heard of people installing steam on the desktop ..

I wonder if Valve could put a warning if that is attempted..

Makes me wonder why those people just don't install in the default location if desktop is their choice.

Anyway, assuming OP uses a HDD for the operating system (and to an extent I hope not because SSDs are much better for it), he can probably recover them anyway via some recovery program like Piriform's Recuva.

Why are you using a 3rd party uninstall tool in the first place? And usually something only uninstalls the folder and it's subfolders, so it would seem that you installed Steam in the wrong place.

This has nothing to do with Steam, but with the 3rd party uninstaller and the use.

While I can't say for certain, would imagine said tool just triggers Steam's own uninstaller tool that's done this for years and still does according to the FAQ too.

Warning:
The uninstallation process deletes the folder Steam was installed to to ensure it is fully uninstalled. If you accidentally installed Steam to a folder containing other data, for example C:\Program Files\ instead of C:\Program Files\Steam\, STOP! Do not run the uninstaller and instead carefully follow the instructions below for Manually Removing Steam, except only delete Steam-related files in step 3.
