how do i increase download speeds?
i have an NVMe SSD capable of almost 4GB/s read and write. my internet is 400 mb/s, though it goes up to 500 and sometimes 600. that would suggest i would download games at an insane rate, but its rarely goes to 30 mb/s, often less than 15. i read about it and they said on the fly decompression. my drive and cpu are plenty good, so why does that alone cause a 2000% reduction in download speed?

TLDR; super fast internet and drive, download speeds are super slow. how to fix pls?

400mbps as reported by your ISP (note the lowercase m) is equal to 50MB/s as reported by default on Steam (uppercase M).

mbps = megabits per second
MB/s = megabytes per second
8 bits to one byte

You're getting a lower than what you should but you're not getting 2000% less.

You can not get more than your ISP allows, and getting a 4GB/s connection would cost you thousands of dollars a month.

even if its 50MB/s, why am i only getting 15MB/s when downloading a game? but yes, upon further reaearch it is in megabits, not megabytes. im used to almost everything using the same standard of measurement, but i guess i was wrong. anyway, how do i get the rest of my speed? i should get double my max download speed but i dont.

Try an entirely different region for a download server, there could be a problem between you and whichever you've chosen.

Or it could be I/O capping, it does unpack and copy during the download.

I'm fairly sure Valve limits download speeds. Especially during this current world event.
