Slow download speed (Steam only)
Hi,

It's been a few days since I actually downloaded anything through Steam but I had speeds of over 25 Mb/s consistently. Latest I think was Temtem or Battlerite (not sure).

Now I thought, I have some time during the corona crisis, so let's buy HalfLife Alyx! My download is maxed at 1 Mb/s!!! While I can still download other files (through torrent/newsgroup/...) at full speed. Steam is the only program that has it's speed limited.

I tried clearing download cache, changed download region (to 10 different countries), nothing changes (and I don't have a limit set)... Always set at 1 Mb/s (doesn't lower, doesn't go higher more than 100 Kb/s).

I'm also directly connected to my ISP, so no sub-router in between.

Any ideas?

I'm really not in the mood to wait 15 hours before the whole game is downloaded :(

Is everything limited cause of the Corona Virus?

and yes, clearly, I called the ISP, and they said it's not their fault. which it isn't, since my phone and my pc still measure the proper speed. it's something to do with Steam but I have no idea why this happened now? there was nothing leading up to it. no changes in my PC settings, no reinstalls of steam before this, it's a total mystery!

Steam pushes 20-30Tbps on a normal day with ease

https://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/

During the Baldur's Gate 3 launch steam was pushing 150Tbps globally. They were pushing more data in Europe than they do on a normal day

Steam can obliterate 1gbps connections

Your steam downloads are limited by

1) your CPU
2) your disk IO
3) your anti-virus
4) your ISP

Hey, I tried some of your problem solving ways but nothing worked. Its possible that the problem is on Windows cuz 2 guys installed windows completely new. I installed win11 no custom iso, just the normal iso from Microsoft.

If possible, ask them to come on over to check directly/physically. :)
Maybe if your ISP techs see the issue first hand, they could suggest something.

Did you try using a 2nd/other network card?

LAN/WiFi card malfunction can sometimes exhibit similar wrong behaviour. :)

Thank you for this I will ask tomorrow

Same problem here in germany .. after all tries to fix the problem i haver reset my router .. than i had my normal downloadspeed for 1 - 2 minutes and now i have again a speed from less 1 mb/s. how can it be? and i found 2 sites on wich you can send your problems with many apps like steam and there is on 1 site 86% people in germany say that they have problems with download on steam and the other site say that 57 % people in germany say that they have problems with download on steam.

edit says: i have this problem since 13.1.2024
How can it be that so many people have had such big problems downloading from Steam for a few days? Do they all suddenly have outdated or broken hardware? Or are they all suddenly too stupid to use Steam? For everyone where the download still works perfectly: do you want to convince many people that it's suddenly their fault? And that even though everything was going well until a few days ago? Are you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ serious? Really? Couldn't it be that it's also because of the provider that calls itself Steam or Valve? Think before you respond to others and then tell them that this sudden appearance of this major download problem is their fault.

Im not sure but after my network driver update, I doubelt my download speed, but still slow than I should have 12.5 MBs but getting only 2.5 MBs.

something weird happened yesterday

let me give some context here

I've been using Steam for absolute ages and have had very fast internet, measuring 920MB/s, and I've been using that for over a year on my PC through a fiber optic connection (yes I reset my router, yes, I checked my speed, and ookla says it's over 900MB/s)

to be clear, it's not just an Ookla test. I literally could download things on Steam at that speed, or slightly lower. We're talking an average of 600 to 800 MB/s on STEAM for OVER A YEAR and then yesterday, bam, it's below 1 MB/s. I literally can't get it over that. Just so it's clear - I didn't just start searching for solutions. I have been at it all day long yesterday, and the entirety of today up until now. I have tried fiddling with absolutely every setting that Steam has (yes, I checked the Downloads tab, and more than 30 times at that, and changed to many different regions) and absolutely nothing has changed. It sometimes goes just above 1MB/s but only briefly, then it's like half that or less the rest of the time.

this is a super huge deal to me because the games I like to play are really big. Elder Scrolls Online, Hunt Showdown, Grand Theft Auto V, Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 2042, Total War Warhammer III and so on. The problem is that my SSD is quite small and so I can't actually fit all of these things on it at once. So, instead, every week or so, I would delete one thing I have played a bunch of and then download another. This was a non-issue for me because it would download anything I wanted in just a couple of minutes. Since this happened yesterday, I got myself in an even bigger mess. as one of the routes to fix the problem, I actually completely deleted every trace of Steam on my PC and reinstalled it. that means not a single game is installed anymore. when I tried to reinstall Hunt Showdown yesterday the download tab said it would take me TWO FULL WEEKS TO DOWNLOAD IT which is insane. I am obviously not going to let that slide.

today in the morning, after trying every fix I could find online, I decided to give it the good old fresh Windows 10 install, and fully reformatted all of my drives. downloaded all my drivers again and then Steam. yes, I restarted the pc, obviously. the download speed is STILL LOWER THAN 1 MB/s which is IMPOSSIBLE WITH MY SETUP and changing the server region does absolutely nothing! zilch! squat! nothing!

please, if anyone can help me save the shred of sanity I have left, is there anything that worked for you when you had this issue recently?

okay, I have an update here, and you won't believe it. I went to do some of the steps suggested by other users here and nothing worked, even after multiple restarts, multiple checks, all done yesterday, only thing I was still waiting on is for my ISP to send over a technician, as a last ditch effort. just now I launched my PC because I said to myself "might as well check it out again who knows!" AND IT WORKS! it doesn't have full speed, but I'm getting download speeds of 50MB/s which is good enough to download everything I wanted within the day! that's crazy! I didn't do anything new since yesterday yet it works today! I have no idea what to share with you guys as to what fixed it because it definitely wasn't anything I did. it was most assuredly something on Steam's end or ISP's end, and the only thing I can come up with is a conspiracy theory that someone somewhere saw how much I was downloading and decided to reduce my speed over the weekend, which gave me a massive fright that this was going to be the normal now forever. again, absolutely none of the fixes worked, even after restarts, but today it just randomly works. same download server as before. same settings on everything as before (because I made sure to revert my changes to windows defender and steam's download settings back to normal after trying each test just to get to the bottom of what is causing it). not sure why it isn't full speed now but I'm just happy to be able to download reasonably quickly again :)

edit: it just went up to 110MB/s again completely on its own!

You may have been throttled by either Steam or your network provider. It happens a lot, sometimes it's you, sometimes it's your area, or just the whole network struggles with providing the bandwidth for every customer. Could also technical issue in your area or your hardware (modem/router).
This is so wierd.
On Staruday I got like 800kb/s. I normally don't worry about things like this but I did a clean reinstall of my System that day (Win11) and I was worried that something was messed up.
I searched the internet for help but nothing was working. To double check, I installed steam on my laptop (Win 10) an it was slow there too. (same 800ks/s)

I even used my mobile network to see it that is the issue. I also testet Wifi. It was all the same.

Yesterday morning I started steam and got my full 36mb/s, I was s happy. It seems to be an Server thing after all.
Today I am back again to 1.4mb/s - I really don't get it....

Things I tried:

Download Server location: Frankfurt (normal)
Helsinki (no change)
North Afrika (no change)

Disabled Firewall
Cleared downlaod chache
reinstalled steam
set priority in Task Manager

Sometimes its good and sometimes not? I am confused

edit: My donwload speed on every other application (EA, Ubisoft, Firefox) is 36Mb/s wich is the technical limit to my 250mbit line. So this is not the issue.

disabling ipv6 was the solution for me, from 1MB/s to 25MB/s

Okay that helped. After disableing and enabling the network adapter. But not sure if that is a long term solution
Same here, first time cant barely go over 1 MB, soimetimes it will spike up a bit, but it seems throttled. i changed regions to all over the place, Doesnt work.
