Slow download speed (Steam only)

Hi,

It's been a few days since I actually downloaded anything through Steam but I had speeds of over 25 Mb/s consistently. Latest I think was Temtem or Battlerite (not sure).

Now I thought, I have some time during the corona crisis, so let's buy HalfLife Alyx! My download is maxed at 1 Mb/s!!! While I can still download other files (through torrent/newsgroup/...) at full speed. Steam is the only program that has it's speed limited.

I tried clearing download cache, changed download region (to 10 different countries), nothing changes (and I don't have a limit set)... Always set at 1 Mb/s (doesn't lower, doesn't go higher more than 100 Kb/s).

I'm also directly connected to my ISP, so no sub-router in between.

Any ideas?

I'm really not in the mood to wait 15 hours before the whole game is downloaded :(

Do you have your games split between two HDD/SSD's. If you do, remove one the slower if the two from the Steam Libary directories (if both same speeds then remove either) and restart steam and try again. For some reason (not always) but if you have directories split between two drives sometimes it defaults to the slower drive and steam completely messes up and downloads at a ridiculously slow speed.

steam/valve needs to do something about it, its ridiculous for the biggest game launcher in the world, that i can only download with 4 MB/s when having 25 MB/s - ITS RIDICULOUS! and no, its not me, its STEAM!

Been happening to me and several friends, can download from every other platform at 25+ Mbps steam starts at 40-50 in every region and then slows to about 5. Ridiculous. And yes I have plenty of RAM and a SSD

same issue. normally i download around 35/40mb/s. the last 4 days i can only download at 200kb/s. maaaaaybe 400kb/s if i am lucky for a few seconds. everything else downloads at normal speeds. so it is for sure a steam issua. server switching doesn't work at all btw. nor does deleting the download cache!

Steam defaults to MB/s. Task Manager uses mb/s.

15 MB/s = 120 mb/s (since 8 bits = 1 BYTE, 120 / 15 = 8)

Steam > Settings > Downloads >>> Display download rates in bits per second

I fixed my issue by disabling IPV6. My downloads were painfully slow, and problems went away when I disabled my IPV6, probably because it's a 6to4 setup.

OH MY GOD. I've had this problem for a year now and this was the solution. I tried everything else in this thread. I went from 5 min of downloading at 40MB/s to 5MB/s constantly....It is now steady. Thank you so much!

It made no difference in my case, downloads are below 1 MB/sec, just painfully slow. I double checked other platforms I get above literally 30MB/s everywhere else. This issue is exclusive to Steam. Just garbage service. This is when I sort of regret I choose this as my primary platform for games, I got over 800 games on Steam, and it's garbage.

Steam is just total ♥♥♥♥ when it comes to downloading games. While using Origin, Epic Games or Rockstar Games i constantly get my 60-65 MB/s. Once i start downloading from Steam, it just jumps between 1 MB/s and 30 MB/s like crazy, dropping to 0 MB/s every like 30 seconds. I know it has to do with Steam and that there is no real solution for years now but i just hate me for choosing Steam as my primary games platform because every time i need to download 80 GB for a new game i want to kill somebody
