You can't delete chats. The mobile may save chats longer than the client.

The new UI saves and stores your chat history for a full 2 weeks as stated here...

CHAT HISTORY
  • Can now scroll back to load up to two weeks of chat history
  • Group chats also keep up to two weeks of chat history
  • Improved display of timestamps, which are now always enabled

https://steamcommunity.com/updates/chatupdate

And here it is stored (2 weeks) for you to see...

Well I hate to say it but if this feature of being able to on-demand clear a chat history is not VERY forth coming I and several friends will cease to do business with steam under ANY guise. This has a very real potential to become a lifetime ban for us because there are plenty of other providers out there for gaming that does have these features.

What are you going on about?

um. . . steam needs ability to clear chat history or i am done with steam. pretty simple actually. the petition was nixed apparently so there is now an effort afoot to make such known in relevant forum discussions in hopes the "powers-that-be" pull their brain boxes out of rectums and make it so. at least a few of us will be voting with our money

But for what reason do you need to clear your chat history? There is really no need for it other than being a little bit OCD and wanting to have a window empty.

:qr:
hmm. need? the question smacks of "what do i need with a gun?" or "if you have nothing to hide why be concerned?" mentality. That same mentality of dups ignorant to world history. Does it matter- i mean REALLY? I have to justify myself? Do i as a consumer NEED to verify my needs to some higher authority who will in turn decide if my NEED is just? Hell NO!

What NEED do i have to support STEAM with my dollars if this feature is not included?

So what if i have an OCD for less clutter. maybe i had a conversation about my significant other that was less than flattering and i don't want them to see it when they walk into the room. What does it matter at all?

There could be a million reasons and really it is no big thing for STEAM to include the feature. i would counter why would steam see a NEED to NOT have this feature included? What is the reason a chat log must be maintained?????? this is something that the powers-that-be should be justifying to us the consumer.

Yes, that really is the bigger and more accurate question. that smacks of a different and bigger conspiracy if folks want to really start asking questions in the manner you just did. all the more reason to just be done with steam now.

You can also post random chats to bump the older messages out of the window.

The fact that more users complained over the years about chat not being stored at all was one of the reasons for the change. Others wanted some history because they were gullible and wanted to report a scammer.

There will most likely never be a clear chat option.

This is also not the suggestion forum.

You are free to leave Steam at any time to use those services that allow you to clear your chat history.

:qr:
um the option to delete upon user desire is the only real option. forget ANYTHING being automatic that is just stupid . . .steam missed the boat just in what you say here. some option a user selects to wipe the chat history. E Z P Z. having the option does nothing to interfere with a single thing you say here. is steam so dense in that they cannot understand this?

I hope you are not a representative of Steam. . as a business owner myself seeing the type of response i would fire you in a heart beat to tell a customer to take their money elsewhere.

Exactly WHERE would be the 'right' forum? see the petition that existed got nixed. This is a discussion on chat history and it is but one more venue to make a voice because it IS relevant and any place there is a discussion on the subject i would say is a good spot to start cluing in some clueless executives on the chance they can be bothered to read anything. . . .squeaky wheels get oiled and all.

Petitions are not allowed.

Make a proper thread here. https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/10/

And just keep it civil, don't go around in circles and it won't be locked.

Why is launch_pad_mcduck2003 being a whiny ♥♥♥♥ and asking to be
able to delete messages? Being able to delete messages could make way
more scammers be able to go around and scam people without any issues.

"as a business owner myself seeing the type of response i would fire you in a heart beat to tell a customer to take their money elsewhere."

Plus, saying how you would fire someone for being logical is just pretentious
so you can feel like you're not just being a trivial ♥♥♥♥.

The user has no benefit from not being able to delete messages.

The irony:
When items were returned from scammers back then chats did not store chats in the window.

In short: No reason to necro this topic to pour your text in.

So...what you're saying is because you're not able to monitor your own words, that's Valve's problem to fix?
