It's on for me because if I remove it the text looks horrible.

Just turn it on and off to see what it does. Should be easy to spot the difference.

I have to have directwrite off.

I quite literally get a headache if it's on because the slight fuzzyness of the text when it's on, makes my eyes think it's out of focus and go into overdrive trying to focus it properly. It's why I hate the new chat/friends interface, and half the reason I don't like chrome (both force directwrite on).

To all the peoeple for whom it looks fuzzy, run the Windows ClearType tuner and it will look good.
Have it on myself, text looks crisp.

I've done that, text in anything that isn't Chrome, Steam w/DirectWrite or Steam's new friends/chat interface looks fine. To get DirectWrite text to look fine in those 3 things, everything else looks like garbage. It's like they've got the "font smoothing" setting turned up to 11.

Nope and i found steam faster without it.. I actually have un-ticked nearly everything in that part of the settings.

DirectWrite can cause in some users that Library refresh and go in to black screen, so be careful
