Info on renting servers?
So I recently ran across a service that rents servers when looking for new games to lan. I know nothing about this and was wondering if anyone had basic info or sites that are reputable for renting servers. Thanks for any info.

go to google and type in the game name + " server rental". essentailly you would pay monthly to rent a server that has an ip address. typically they're tailored for specific games and would require a command in the game pointed to your server. you'll of course have to do some tweaking. if you're new to server maintenance, watch videos on it first.
Is this something worth spending money on for a weekend lan? (I don't mind spending $30 for a weekend lan if there are benefits) is this CMD process to get it up and running somewhat simple for a new person?
It might work just out of the box. There might be problems, nobody can tell you the future.

If you have an unused pc/laptop somewhere, consider to setup a dedicated server yourself.
You can do that long before the lan weekend and test it and be sure it will work.

The knowledge you get while setting up a dedicated server is good to have for a pc gamer.
If you are doing a weekend LAN running it yourself on a dedicated second machine is likely going to be far more reliable and stable (since you'll have a lot of bandwidth to the server and extremely low ping) compared to renting a server.

If you were doing weekend gaming with your friends with them not all over at your place then renting a server would potentially be a better option.

Why would you need a server for a LOCAL Area Network?

Because a dedicated server has better perfomance than a client hosting and playing at the same time on the same pc and could possibly host different games at the same time.

Performance isn't going to be a problem on a local network spanning all of 10 meters of cable, and if someone wants to play a different game they'll host it on their PC.

It's not rocket science.

Yeah, it depends on what hardware you have, what games you want to play and how many guys (girls?) are coming, but what Narushima says makes sense.

Some games allow you to just play a game and be the server at the same time. That is "listen server" mode.

If you can run these games in listen server mode, it would be the easiest way.
Thanks for the help guys. Sounds like it probably isn't something worthwhile. I guess I was coming at it from the angle that it might be beneficial just so that we can run our own game. We had a lan a while back where we all picked up Siege but when we went to play, we found out we couldn't run our own games just for us without being level three and when we tried to jump in games and level up so that we could start our own games, the community was so toxic, we stopped playing right away. Would have been fun to just be able to set up a 4v4 game on our own without the hassle of other players. Thanks again.
