I hate STEAM's stupid anti-deadzone setting. Why is it so annoying?
I am using Xbox 360 wireless speed wheel. I don't have any problem with my existing racing games which were not bought from STEAM. However, I bought DiRT Rally through STEAM a year ago, and found that my Xbox 360 wireless speed wheel had a very strange "deadzone problem" in this game.

In DiRT Rally, you can go to OPTIONS--->CONTROLS--->Advanced gamepad settings, there you can test your steer wheel. Turn your steer wheel and the "Steering" display will response accordingly. For example, you turn you wheel a bit, and it will tell you you have turned it by 40%. Turn it fully and it will tell you it is turned by 100%. Note that it is better to set the Steering deadzone to zero first before testing (can be set in the same page).

Now, the problem was, when I turned my speed wheel slightly, it didn't respond. Then I turned it a little bit more, it suddenly jumped to 17%! I tested around. I did set the deadzone to zero. I went to windows setting or other existing racing games(not bought from STEAM) to test, no such problem. There was really no deadzone for my steer wheel. The strange deadzone jumping only occured in DiRT Rally.

Last month I bought Project CARS 2 through STEAM. It also had the same weird deadzone problem. So it was not DiRT Rally's fault!

After spending a lot of time testing and looking for solution on internet, today I just happened to find out the problem. It was because STEAM has a hidden stupid setting call anti-deadzone setting [Remark]. This anti-deadzone setting is hidden somewhere deep in STEAM. It is not really that stupid actually. It IS the hidden setting of it that, if you set it to ZERO, then it gives you a hidden value of 0.25! (i.e. Although it shows it is set to ZERO, its true internal value is 0.25)

To work around this problem, adjust the anti-deadzone setting to a very small value other than ZERO. For example, set it to 0.003 or 0.002 or 0.001. And then, problem solved! I tested in DiRT Rally, and my steer wheel now can really go from 0 to 100%, without the stupid deadzone jumping problem!

But then there is another problem. I noticed that, for another game Project CARS 2, I also needed to adjust it specifically (Look at the first step in the [remark]. This time, in Library, go to Project CARS 2 instead of DirtRally. And then do the same thing again)

And so, I must say, this hidden & misleading setting (ZERO becomes a hidden vale 0.25, and users will not know because it just says it is ZERO) is STUPID!

I am really very angry now, because after I did the same adjustment for Project CARS 2, for unknown reason now the steering in this game became messed up! The car will somehow automatically turn left or right even my steer wheel was at a neutral position. This is totally messed up. Now I cannot even play the game. I don't know what's the problem. I am tired. So I give up, spend an hour to type this post to point out this problem in the STEAM forum, and yell: TO HELL WITH YOU!!!

===========

[Remark] To find the anti-deadzone setting, go to Big Picture mode ---> Library ---> DirtRally,
and then in this DirtRally page, click Manage game ---> Controller Configuration
and then in this page an Xbox controller is shown. Look at the bottom left, click "JOYSTICK MOVE LS CLICK".
and then click ADDITIONAL SETTINGS at the bottom right.
and then look at the bottom right. There is an anti-deadzone setting there.

So, just a rant?

:qr:
Or, you know, stop using 10 years old hardware that wasn't meant to be used on the PC in the first place and then complain that it's acting out? Maybe the wheel itself broke down after all those years. It is a Xbox 360 controller after all. I'm surprised it lasted that long in the first place.

You are wrong. As said in my post, "I went to windows setting or other existing racing games(not bought from STEAM) to test, no such problem. There was really no deadzone for my steer wheel." It was not the problem of my wheel.
And I have shown you that was caused by the stupid anti-deadzone setting problem.

I hope STEAM people will fix this stupid hidden setting thing. When the anti-deadzone setting is set to ZERO, then it really should be honestly ZERO, instead of showing to be ZERO but actually a hidden value of 0.25!
Disable controller settings in steam.

Would you tell me where I can find this setting?

Disable all there

Would have been a lot nicer if you asked for help instead of coming here to blame everything steam related. Luckily for you the guy above is willing to help. I surely wasn't going to after your rant above. Next time maybe just ask for help and you wouldn't have to wait 7 hours for a fix.

I had to disable this too otherwise weird controller issues would ensue.. Why its enabled to begin with is beyond me.

Actually, I have to enable for the part of "Playstation config support". Otherwise if I disable it and I use my PS4 controller to play Rocket League, the analogue stick will become inaccurate (even it is a the neutral position, my car will turn left slightly). But when I enable it, my PS4 controller works normally again.
I don't really understand why is this anyway.

Because PS controllers arent supported natively? Thats why all of the controller configuration stuff exists in Steam, so you can use most types of controllers with a little setup.

The difference between X and direct input, isnt it?
