Melee-Based Battle Royale Game?

My friend and I were discussing ideas for new battle royale games, and we both thought that a melee-centered BR game would be a great change from what we have right now. I've started coming up with basic concepts, but I'm not experienced enough with game design and programming to build a game on my own. Any ideas, guides, tutorials, anything that could help me with this would be greatly appreciated!

A 2D battle royale game would definitely be interesting. The Smash team should get on that.

wouldn't really work tbh, and probably 90% of the people who know about your game will think you're just beating the dead horse (aka the battle royale genre)

and with games like fortnite out there, yeah... good luck getting popular
