Old friend list already did those things as well. The only difference with the new one is that you can close the game group if there are too many in it.
So how exactly is this so much worse than the old version?
It's basically the exact same thing.
All I want is a list of friends that I can sort by "in game", online, sleeping or offline.
What benefit does this grouping of games (that I never play) being displayed at the top of my frineds list? Me no likey. Let me take it away.
This is what I'm talking about. Give me the option to completely remove this useless options. Just list my friends. . .not what games Steam wishes I would buy and play.
It's so you can easily tell how many of your friends play a certain game so that you can join them.
Before everyone who played a game was placed at the top. Now you can just hide the ones in games you don't like or care about. So instead of taking 7 rows of friends it'll now just take one row with the game name.
So it isn't useless.
Also people have asked for an UI update for quite some time now.
Just give us the option to disable that nonsense. It makes the whole list unclear/confusing/irritating.
Because you're fine with a long list of friends you can just keep all the game categories open. Doesn't take any longer to find your friend in the new list compared to the old one.
Btw, what is your problem? Nobody wants the feature to be gone for everyone. All we want is OPTIONS! We are on the pc not on a freaking console, so give us customisation options.
No need to always argue against people who just dislike some of the new features, we know that you love the new ui and it's features.
Look at this post, maybe this helps you:

Your reasoning is flawed. I personally had everyone tagged and a specific few fav'd so I only saw who I wanted to see when I wanted to see them.
Furthermore I configured it to one line per contact, which meant I could see about 3 dozen contacts at a time on my list. Now there is MINIMAL difference between Compact ON and OFF.
The only feature that impressed me was drag and drop images into chat, and I've still not had a reason to use it.
I still hate that CS:GO is on the top of my friends list. Let's not discuss how much I dislike CS:GO so what is the harm in giving me the option to REMOVE that from my drop down list of games?
I'll take one good reason and then shut up forever but until that day comes, I hate this.
It may be true some people asked for this, but it came as a surprise to a lot of people that didn't ask for it, and now must contend with what the vocal requestors had wanted.
Having the option to keep the interface information dense, clean, and without distractions would be a great plus for me. There are some benefits I really don't value, but I wouldn't want to see the progress stop because some old crank resists change.
It'd be nice if the old crank could change his settings to match his prefences, though. It's why he has a computer to begin with, and not a console.
