Why aren't rick rolls allowed?
I just don't understand why Rick Rolls are specifically mentioned in the rules. I understand that spamming rick rolls can get annoying, but according to this community guide it falls under the category of spam. I just don't understand what the issue is. If you post a single rick roll you can get a community ban.

Here are some issues I have with this silly rule.

  • It is not neccessarily spam. If you post a single Rick Roll, no matter how garbage the thread you are posting it on, it is considered spam.
  • It's not 2008 anymore.
  • Only covers Rick Rolls. Duck Rolls and other such things are still allowed, it's just Rick Astley that isn't allowed.

I personally suggest we remove this silly rule. It's dated, doesn't allow fun, and I thought this was America.

Agreed. Additionally, I actually very much like the song. Why am I not allowed to share it, even if it is a meme? Why are other memes not banned? Where is the logic? Are the mods just being obtuse because they can't take a joke? Why isn't it more publicly known? It's not like people do it constantly anyway, but why isn't it an obvious rule if it's an instant ban? I could have gone and made a rick roll just now without knowing without this post.

As a wise man once said, "It's either all okay, or none of it's okay."

Granted, that man was Idubbbz speaking about a very sensitive topic but I think the same general message applies.

Rick rolls are intentional misdirects. It doesn't just mean the song from rick astley, if you do an intentional misdirect and have it lead to duckroll song, that qualifies as spam. You must stay on topic, and topics can't be discussions which are just "meme", they need to go somewhere and have relevant information.

Rick rolls and variations thereof are spam in every sense of the word. Having fun at the expense of others is never good.

If you'll care to notice it says i.e. +1, 10char, rickrolls

i.e. means FOR EXAMPLE, All variations of rickrolls are not allowed.

Honestly there's a lot of quotes to the same effect, not just Idubbbz. But yes, either you ban it all or you don't. Anyone with experience in owning a forum or discord server learns that pretty quickly. I question why steam hasn't.

It is ALL banned, It says i.e., That means for example. They're not going to list every single meme, it brings the point that disruptive memes(and ones which don't contribute to discussion) aren't allowed by saying rick rolls.

Please take my comment with a grain of salt as, like I previously mentioned, I am having my eyes opened right now and was not aware of this issue before.

Regardless, we're talking about instant. community. bans... which the other offenses don't seem to receive, and duckrolls don't seem to be getting the same backlash unless I'm missing something. There is a specific forum for which spam is accepted, and if you post rickrolls there you still get an instant community ban? which is what this topic refers to. Yet in the spam forum you can still do +1. So... how is this applicable?

"Hey guys, welcome to my thread that promotes racism."
"Hey guys, welcome to my homophobic thread."
"Hey guys, I made a thread with a rick roll in it."

All three of this things get you the same penalty.

Other offenses do receive community bans, If you're racist, or flame other users, you will get a 1-2 week ban which escalates depending on how many times you've received bans before until it leads until permanent ban. All of these rules being broken aside from the rule specifically on piracy (which is an immediate permanent ban) generally follow this rule.

But then there's also the severity, If you're spamming threads with rick rolls then you may very well be permanently banned the first offense if your post history is flooded with nothing but memes.

You know, I don't think that's true.
If you posted a link saying "This is my favorite song" for any random song in any random thread, I feel like the worst that would happen is a mod would remove your post and maybe give you a warning.

If you posted a hidden link (a link that doesn't show you what it's linking to) on a totally relevant thread you'd probably get banned.
Is bumping threads allowed?

Better be, because this topic is too important to just let it die.
