Wine + Steam not getting online since update
So, since the new steam update introducing the new Steam Chat (going discordy), steam won't go online in the friends menu anymore, when emulated via Wine.
As it so happens, this was from one day to another during a broderlands run..

Solution:
Configure steam to run with -nofriendsui parameter. Afterwards steam is able to go online for friends again, so you can play together.

The exact place that you need to input the -nofriendsui and -nochatui is in the wine wrapper exe flags.

1. Go to specific wrapper
2. Show package contents
3. Double click on wineskin
4. Go to "advanced"
5. In EXE Flags write (no quotation marks) "-nofriendsui" and "-nochatui" with a space between the first and second commands

This "should" (unless steam breaks it again) disable the new chat ui, which allows you to see friends again.
I have a related problem where while running Steam on wine 3.17-staging the Friends window doesn't open, and other people can't see me online, and I can't show people that I'm playing Age of Empires II: HD Edition. Please fix your esteemed honored program

Why not running Steam natively in Linux while testing Proton? In the long-term, thats easier.
Would you kindly direct me to how I can install windows games from the Linux Steam? Rn it says the game is not compatible with my current platform.

Right now, Proton is enabled hy default for specific games tested by Valve. Theres a switch (in Steam settings) to enable Proton for everything .

I suggest you go to the Steam-on-Linux-forum if you want more details. Theres tons of talk about Proton there
It's still couldnt disable the new chat ui
