The CD-key problem between Steam and UPlay (and others probably)
I have reach the limit of my patience in this matter and will now make a statement regarding it.

I recently bought Heroes VI via Steam and tried to get it to work. I knew I had to open UPlay in order for it to start and all that. But there is a problem right there. Steam never gave me any game key for it for activation of the game. I couldn't redeem it! Steam has removed the option to view games' keys, so there was no option for me other than buying the game directly on UPlay a SECOND TIME!!!

Half of that fault lies with Steam's move of removing that option for their users. UPlay is not without fault for not doing their part in making sure the process in this case, and possibly others, seamless. And it's not just NOT seamless, it's an INSURMOUNTABLE OBSTACLE!

Another example is a friend of mine bought Anno 2070 via Steam (since it is on a big sale as of right now the 27th of February 2020). He could launch the game on both Steam and UPlay, however when he got to the main menu of the game, he was prompted to enter the activation code, which neither UPlay or Steam can apparently supply for whatever reason.

And I've scoured the net for solutions and I've only found people having similar problems and Steam and Ubisoft only seem to be pointing fingers at one another.

Now, please convince not just me, but the rest of the gaming community that this isn't a large scale scam. That you are working on a solution, preferably with Ubisoft. That the people affected will either get their money back or get help making their legally and rightly bought games work.

If this is some kind of unintended side-effect of Steam and Ubisoft's efforts to counter piracy, then for Chrissakes make an effort to make sure your law-abiding customers DON'T SUFFER FOR IT!!!!

I've already made the same complaint in the Ubisoft forums. You know, to be fair...

You just need to have the most updated version of Uplay and log into that account when starting the game here.

This, especially the last bit. You’re making it sound like you opened UPlay yourself instead of letting Steam open it for you.

In your Uplay account settings is an option to link the account with your Steam account.

You can also send a screenshot of the bill or / and game in your library to Uplay support, so they would have unlocked it on your Uplay account without buying it twice.
Recently Settlers 2 TNG became unable to install on Windows 10, so I wrote the support and recieved Settlers 2 History Edition for free, but if you don't talk with support members you won't get any useful help.

The best solution is to open an Uplay support ticket and wait for a chat with a staff member.

@Hotsauce Don't take me for an idiot. UPlay is always up to date, it updates itself when necessary everytime you start it, don't you know that? This is not the problem nor the solution.

You'd be surprised that over the last 4+ years this has been going on, that was the fix for hundreds of users who asked on these very forums.

Then we’ll go back to your second paragraph. You’re starting UPlay up MANUALLY instead of letting Steam launch it for you?

@Acroamatibus Already made that ticket about an hour ago. And while it sounds nice that all one has to do is talk to the support and all will be solved, that simply isn't the case every time. You might have read in my post that Steam and Ubisoft simply point their figurative fingers at the other. Well, that's the nutshell of the responses I got when I looked for help.

@Brujeira I know I launched it via Steam the first time :/

Edit: And I tried manually after that first time didn't work

To claim game from Steam to Uplay, is few ways.

A. CD Key. https://imgur.com/DCsC3st

B. Linking account. Uplay > Settings > Account linking > Link to Steam account.

C. Launching the game, which calls for the Uplay client, ensure you login to correct uplay account you wish to claim your copy on the Uplay account, and click confirm to claim on the uplay account.

D. Contact Ubisoft support, provide pictures, as well answer any other questions they may ask.

All you have to do is ensure uPlay is updated to the latest version and if that fails, also ensuring that both clients are running with administrator privileges. If your Steam account and uPlay is linked, when you buy a Ubisoft game on Steam and launch it from your library, all you have to do is login and then it works.

Whilst the error messages are somewhat misleading and confusing, people really do get into pickles with dual DRM's when it's actually very routine.

@Dr.Shadowds A. This was never provided in my personal case, nor with my friend's.

B. My Uplay account was and is already linked.

C. Already done as well.

D. And here is the real problem. I get pointed in either direction but find no help. To their credit, however, they haven't outright ignored me as others have said they have.
