Additional Protection for Accounts
Dear Sir Steam Bosses,

People, especially over the years, can find that they have spent thousands of pounds on their Steam account, not to mention it being an important social media hub.

I am concerned that there is no definitive way to recover accounts if serious hacking or other critical account loss scenarios take place.

There aught to be an option somewhere on the system to upload ID such as passport, driving license, other official ID etc, so that if a critical loss event occurs, one can prove identity and retrieve steam account.

Right now if a person loses their email as well as steam password, they have pretty much lost their account, I believe?

My account is getting to the point now(or already past it, most likely) where it would be very worthwhile for me to upload some ID, etc, just as a prophylactic measure against a very bad day being even worse.

Definitely something to consider, a very worthwhile feature, just to have some kind of ID uploaded to an account to help the support teams recover lost accounts in worst-case scenarios.

Yours Faithfully,

Gavin786

people are idiots, they give away their log in. that is how accounts get stolen. figure out how to stop people from handing over the log in and accounts wont get stolen.

there is a way to recover the account, and it works. but people do stupid things, so it takes longer to recover the account.

you dont need your email to recover it. you only need to be able to tell steam what the original email address was for the account. this is something only you should know. steam asks for stuff that only the original account owner should know.

Been suggested many times in the correct forum. Most places won't let Valve use IDs.

Most people who get 'hacked' give the information away themselves.

3rd Party sites, scams from bots, random accounts, etc.

Sure there is. Presenting steam support with the correct information is all that's usually required.

And the best way to not have to deal with this at all, is for people to stop being so gullible, greedy, or foolish in their browsing.

Definitely. Years ago I got my account hijacked by someone that also hijacked my e-mail. Steam was very efficient in getting it back for me when I provided my purchase history. When there's proof, there's a way.

There are. You need to provide proof of ownership.

There aught to be an option somewhere on the system to upload ID such as passport, driving license, other official ID etc, so that if a critical loss event occurs, one can prove identity and retrieve steam account.
And how do you verify that the person submitting the id is the owner of said ID. ANyone can snap a picture of a driver's license passport.

Right now if a person loses their email as well as steam password, they have pretty much lost their account, I believe?
And something has to go spectacyularly wrong for that to happen.. BUIt you also have the option of linking the phone number

As said, since you can't verify who is presenting the ID... yeah this sort of thing falls flaty. Never mind that Valve would need access to the government databases to verify any of it which many, many governments are not gonna allow.

Look. At somepoint, it boils down rto users not being IDOTS .
No, to much personal information. Pay a few games with steam vouchers from the store. That and the steam guard we have now is enough.

Valve has no right to ask for such information, nor can they actually verify such documents.

Security/protection will always remain useless when people are idiots and give away their credentials. There is only so much that Valve can do.

There comes a point that people simply have to take responsibility for their own actions.
