Steam client needs more than 10Gb free space?!
Over the last few months I've found a strange pattern. When one of my disks has less than 10Gb free space, Steam starts to behave strangely.

More specifically - sometimes friends list doesn't load, notifications list doesn't load, even wishlist and store page have trouble loading (though not as often as friends and notifications). Forum often display "can't login" message.

Why would chat and online functions even need 10Gb?

Why Steam behave this way ? That's odd, because it shouldn't.
Are you sure the issue is tied to the low hard drive space ? Try to clear some space and check again. If Steam is going to fill that space, even for temporary files, then windows should give you an advice, so i don't think is using it. (EDIT : ok, you already did it).

Another possibility is the the virtual memory. Virtual memory can easily fill 10 gb of storage if needed and Steam was found not so good (euphemism) with releasing ram. So if your system have low ram available Windows can use a lot more virtual memory, filling your hard drive and giving you issue.
Still, windows should give you some warning message about it.

Anyway, you really should install more storage space or delete unused files on your drive, 10 GB space can easily be filled by bad written software with the habit to create huge caches.

If one of your disks has less than 10 gb space left on it it's time for you to get a bigger drive. This is a computer issue, not a steam problem.

Then give me money for a new drive.

Are you expecting some kind of sympathy?

Dude, it's going to ruin your data if there's too little room on the drive. This isn't new, this is how hard drives have *literally always* worked.

Get a new drive.

No, I expect solution to the problem that doesn't require me to pay for it.

FYI, I know how disk drives and software work. And that's why I know that 10Gb free space for a chat and notifications is unreasonable.

Since you don't say how large the drive is, 10Gb is minimal for even an OS to be running on properly with a decent amount of ram.

You don't seem to grasp that that 10g for free space is used by the drive constantly, it's not just empty free nothing. Once it runs out of room for transferring files while you're doing *anything*, including 'chat and notifications', your system starts to fail.

Get.
A.
Bigger.
Drive.

If your drive is say 500 gb, 10 free is barely scraping by.

If your drive is 1tb, it's *in immediate danger of not working right*. If you've got 16g ram like most gamers do these days... you need at least that much free on the drive for files to get dumped to.

Get a job? I mean seriously what exactly do you think you're gonna get told here? No one has a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ magic wand for your problematic tiny drive.

He's probably not old enough to work.
What size is your drive?

My steam folder is only 1.24 GB. Without games or save files/screenshots (userdata folder).
Uninstall games you don't play anymore that will free up space on your hard drive.
But the userdata can take up a lot of space because that is where some of your game saves are saved at and your screenshots.

You can free up a lot of space that is if you took a lot of screenshots and delete the screenshots found in this folder.

C:\ Programfiles (x86)\Steam\userdata\<yourSteamID>\760\remote\

Each folder in the 760\remote folder corresponds to a game id which holds the screenshots for that game.

Either make space on drive by deleting things you don't need, or do what Zekiran said by getting a bigger storage drive.

No one going to provide you money on this forum, also FYI no begging.

If you need money either A) Get a job, or B) Ask your parents to help you out.

I have two drives - both 500Gb. And yes, after I've uninstalled Witcher 3, Steam app started working just fine. That's exactly why I wrote to the forum in the first place. It's just weird that Witcher 3, Total War: Warhammer, Stellaris or UE4 can easyly work, without requiring so much disk space as needed for Steam online functions.

Than stop giving me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ advice that demands money from me. If you think that YOUR money is too valuable to give away, why should I spend MY money for solving problems that are clearly Steam devs oversight.

Not a BS advice, you just don't like the answers that were given to you, grow up.

Seriously, do you walk around telling people that kind of thing in real life?

"Man my car's out of gas!"

"Then buy some gas and fill it up."

"I MEANT WITHOUT PAYING FOR SOMETHING IMPORTANT!"

jees.

Not sure if I should pity him for having such low IQ.

He begging for people to buy him things... :rfacepalm:

If you're down to your last 10gb with 2x 500gb drives then basic logic would be to a) get a bigger drive or b) remove stuff.

Also just because Steam may require in excess of 10gb free space doesn't mean it intends to use the whole amount. There is reserve space because things like Windows and other programs also require an outlay.
